I'm looking at fitting a retriever soon to mine in empire .5-.6 space.
[Retriever, New Setup 1] [Low] Mark I Generator Refitting: Capacitor Power Relay Mark I Generator Refitting: Capacitor Power Relay
[Mid] Small Shield Booster II
[High] Strip Miner I Strip Miner I
[Drone] Hammerhead I x2 Hobgoblin I x1
This is what I was thinking for a low skill character trying to mine.

Edited by: Mel Dareia on 03/03/2009 02:27:00 I'm currently flying a Retriever with a low skill pilot (2.8 Mio SP) with the following fitting:
[Retriever, retriever 1]
Quantum Co-Processor I Mining Laser Upgrade I
[empty med slot]
Strip Miner I Strip Miner I
Warrior I x4 (when alone)
OR
Mining Drone I x4 (when in a group)
I don't need shield boosters/armour repper in the 0.5 system I mine in, my drones easily kill the rats well before I'm into armour.

Change the cap power relays out. You want expanded cargo hold modules there, probably. I'd suggest a mining upgrade, but I don't think a Retriever has the CPU to take one. Strip miners only activate once every 3 minutes, so you have plenty of time for the capacitor to recharge between cycles. The tank is paper thin, so I think you'll need someone else flying cover if you're mining in a .5 or a .6 system.
If you absolutely must have a capacitor mod in there, use capacitor flux coils instead. They won't gimp your shield boost like cap power relays do. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

No cover just myself.
I'm about a week away from t2 light drones if that helps any.

Just use drones to kill rats, save the Retriever slots for cargo expanders, mining laser upgrade, named coprocessor.

Heres my old fit:
2x strip miner I's 1x Survey scanner 2x Cargo expanders
Drones: as many T2 Warriors as you can fit in there, the rats in these systems are Frigs so light drones should kill them quick (just replace your T1 drones when you can).
You shouldn't have any probs really fit like this. -----------------------------------------------

^ what he said. Rat specific T2 drones will fly cover for you.

oh wow, I used 2x strip 1's 2x cargo exp and a ore scanner, kept my eye out for rats and used the drones to kill them, i did mine mostly in .6,7 so maybe the rats are harder, but i never needed cap or cpu, ...

Edited by: Thorian Baalnorn on 03/03/2009 17:21:27 High sec retriver fit for jetcan mining: Lows: co processor mining upgrade 1
Mids: Survey scanner
High: 2x strip miners
Drones: 5x rat spec or 5 x mining drones
keep your drones out they will auto attack anything that shoots at you so you dont even have to bother to lock targets. When your with friends and your running rat def, when you find out who is getting attacked set drone group to guard that person. they will auto agro the rat without you locking. I use my target locks for roids rather than drone management since high sec asteroids tend to be quite small.
If your not jetcan mining use cargo expanders in your lows instead.
Edit to add: if you really want to be creative you can use 1 or 2 light drones and the rest mining drones and control the drones individually. light sec rats have never taken my light t1 drones past shield and a t1 can pop a frig rat in less than a minute.

If you are jetcanning, go MLU and CoPro. If you are in an area where can flippers are rampant, go 2x Cargo Expander.

I live and mine in 0.6 Amar space. My retriever is fitted with strip miner I x2, residual survey scanner in the mid slot, and Cargo Expander IIs in the low slots. Also x4 Hobgoblin Is, which handle all rats easily. After talking with corp mates, I opted out of Strip Miner II's. CPU upgrade is generally not necessary, though I do have it. I keep an armor repair unit in my hanger, and fit if I take armor damage. (rare) Now, more importantly, here are the rules I live by when mining alone:
Never, ever jetcan mine alone. With the Cargo II's fitted you loose very little by taking ore to the nearest station, even in the Retriever. Losing a can of ore is really no big deal, but it spoils my day, and I've lost too many of them.
Check prices for unrefined ore. Kernite (not Luninous or Fiery) often sells at very high prices because it's required for some missions. Know your mineral prices and trends. Never sell blind. Never assume anything.
When can mining with corp, if a stranger shows up in the belt in a combat-type ship, I immediately pull all possible ore from cans and prepare for evac. If he approaches, you know all you need to know. This is some pimple-faced 14-yr old with a big ship, or the emotional equivalent, who wouldn't mess with you if he didn't know he could kill you. He just needs and excuse because he probably doesn't want to get his nice shiney ship Condordokkened. When this happens, take the high road. Leave. Ignore. It frustates the hell out of these jerks!
My final tip--Get yourself into a good mining corp. If you don't have one, mssg me in-game and I'll talk to you about mine.
Fly safe, and chew those rocks!

Umm... I would not leave drones out, and I would especially not leave them out on aggressive.
Can flipper flips the can, marked as aggressive to you, drones attack can flipper thereby marking you as aggressive to the flipper, shortly afterwards you're warping back to station in your pod looking for the nearest mining barge in the market :)
Then again, I've never had drones out on aggressive when someone flipped my can, so I'm not certain that this story represents The Truth.

COMPLETELY offtopic, but I had opened this thread, alt-tabbed, came back later and read this, and I was thinking "WTF? Retribution with Strip Miners and drones!?" Then I felt stupid.
