I started Eve up this morning and saw there was a new patch. When I tried to download and apply the patch I got an error that the old files were not correct or the original files it was looking for.. something along those lines. So it couldn't continue. I said ok.. I uninstalled and downloaded 1724-full-version from eve-online.com and tried to reinstall, then I got this message:
The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete. This could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus.
You may want to contact the author of this installer to obtain a new copy.
It may be possible to skip this check using the /NCRC command line switch (NOT RECOMMENDED).

I ran my adware program and scanned my computer with Norton Antivirus, I had 90 adwares and 8 viruses on my computer.. nuked all the adware and Norton fixed 6 of the viruses and quarantined 2.. so I deleted those quarantines files and tried again but got the same error. I reset and tried again and got the same error.
SO I FORMATTED MY COMPUTER. Nuked the entire hard drive (I only have games, MP3's, and AIM on my computer)... started brand new with a brand new copy of Win2000Pro... downloaded a fresh copy of Eve ver1724 from the website so I wouldn't be infected or have an older troubled copy... go to run it:

Run the Adware detector and virus scanner again to see if you have been infected again. When I did a test and connected a freshly installed windows machine to the Internet without any firewall I get attacked and infected almost immediately.
A good practice is to have the most recent service packs and security fixes burnt on a CD when you reformat a windows machine. Also install virus protection and a software firewall if you dont reside behind a hardware one protecting you.
If your system is not infected and you still are having problems with the installation post again below and I am sure someone or myself will be able to look into it and suggest further action.

after the patch i was having ctd (crash to desktop) problems.  I renamed my eve directory and tried to reinstall from the original eve download. I recieved the same error. I then downloaded the newest eve install file, but same problem.
The problem is with the NSIS installer. NSIS is a windows-based installer i believe was something originally from nullsoft. Currently the project is located at www.sourceforge.net. There is a search box on the left hand side of the site. Type in NSIS and it will take you to the homepage for that project.
If you already have NSIS installed, uninstall it. There is an uninstall utility located in the NSIS program directory. Then download the latest version of NSIS from sourceforge. It's version 2.0. The problem is that Norton's virus definitions from either august 9th or august 10th have flagged on of the files from the NSIS program as a trojan.download virus. Prior to this it was fine. That's why you had it installed on your computer in the past and didn't have any problems. It just happend the latest eve patch (and ur need to reinstall) happend at the same time that Norton's virus definitions were updated and just happend to include one of the files from NSIS as a trojan virus.
That's alot of chance happenings, timing was just wrong. At anyrate install NSIS v2.0 from sourceforge. But when it asks for installed components uncheck the 'plugins' directory. That directory is where the .dll is located that norton doesn't like. By unchecking it, NSIS will not attempt to install the file and norton won't hose the installation for you like a good little virus scanner would.
I had the very same problem. As soon as i installed and deselected the 'plugins' directory, and ran the eve download the installer worked fine.  This should fix your problem as well.

Problem solved: Bad 128mb RAM chip.
I have a 512mb, a 256mb, and a 128mb chip. My dad own/runs a computer store, and my older brother works for him and writes software for him occasionally. He just happened to have written a diagnostic program... tested the RAM one chip at a time, the 128 was totally fried. Took it out and still have 768mb Ram left and everything works fine.

I just went through the exact same problem with eve online, it wasnt with the patch but just installing on a different system. It is definitely worth a try.

That is a RAM tester and is very simple to use. Heck I will even explain in simple steps so you dont have to read as much info.
1. Download the program
2. Open program and insert a 3.5 floppy into your disk drive
3. save to the disk and to desktop incase =)
4. turn off your pc
5. take out all of your RAM but 1 stick and restart
6. select first boot device as 3.5 floppy on your CMOS
7. (make sure your disk is in the 3.5 drive) let it run the program. You will see the RAM test run through a series of 6 tests if it says "successful" your good to go. If it says failure there's your problem.
8. hit "X" and turn off your pc. Use another stick of RAM and repeat step 7.
I can't tell you how many things I have tried from the windows installer updates to manually running /NSIS it took but that did it and I hope it works for you. I am actually posting my results across all the sites I have looked at just hoping it helps others out =)

Just to corroborate the dev's post, I work in tech support for a university in the US, so we do a lot of rebuilds (reinstall OS, programs, etc). Now that we have SP 2 built into the WinXP disks, it's not a big deal, but prior to that we always had to install stuff while the computer was disconnected from the network. If the Windows machine had a connection to the internet, it would be infected in less than 5 minutes after install.
There was actually a study done on this that I remember reading on Slashdot, but I'm not going to root around for it. Seem to remember the rate of infection being something like faster than 8 seconds
