I just started working on LVL2 missions and I am curious if it is worth the hassle of salvaging or if I should wait for LVL3 missions?
I have a Cormorant salvager w/ 2 tractors and 4 salvagers but it is slowwwwwww. I know that the materials salvaged are worth more than the random drops but are the materials worth the time at this point? --------------------------------------

If you are making two trips, probably not. On all my ships I fit one salvager and one tractor beam (on cruisers or higher). I sacrifice a weapons slot to salvage in one run.
IMO, it is worth it. If I had to make two runs, I wouldn't salvage until level 3 missions.

And just to throw this out there. I just completed a mission that had 4 or 5 large waves of enemies resulting in around 25-40 wrecks. Would that still fit with the "two trip, dont do it" thinking or would you make an exception in that instance? --------------------------------------

It depends on your skill. I have salvaging V, so it goes pretty quick for me...in general, I have already salvaged my current wreck by the time I have tractored in the next one.
If you skill is low, it may take a lot longer using one salvager.
Thats why I recommend training to at least salvaging 3. It really does make a difference. But because it is so random, you'll have to experiment. I never did the two trips thing though, even when my skill was low. I didn't even know people did that until I read about it on the forums. I thought everyone did it the same way I do.
Only time I personally would do a specialist salvager is if it was with at least one other person. I wouldn't do it solo.

I would have thought that most missions would be worth salvaging, even if you're coming back in a second ship to do it (obviously this depends whether you have to jump to other systems though from your agent's system). Level 2 missions will probably yield less salvage than level 3 missions, but since they have much less pay and bounties anyway, the salvage will still be worth a lot compared to just running another mission.
If you're missioning for ISK, salvaging is likely to be worthwhile regardless of what level mission you're running. If you're doing it for standings, then just blitz through the missions ASAP and ignore the salvage (or fit some salvaging equipment as you go).
Very few ships can fit both a salvager and a tractor without compromising their offensive performance much - and besides, if you're killing enemies at the same speed you can salvage them with a single salvager then something else is wrong anyway.

There are several factors to concider in making that choice.
The first one is why aren't you doing level 3 missions?
- Are you saving up to buy a better ship? If so, then salvaging is probably worth while, it is just a question of salvaging as you go or coming back after completing a few missions. I would suggest the latter: fit a ship to complete missions as quickly as possible, kill rats for an hour or so, then come back and salvage in an optimally configured ship. Salvaging should take less time than completing the mission in the first place, but will likely earn you as much or more.
- Are you trying to aquire the needed standings? If this is the case, then I would suggest waiting until you move on to level 3 missions. Time spent salvaging does not increase your standings. That is time better spent getting another mission.
- Do you need better support skills? In this case it there is nothing firm to base a recommendation on. Do whatever you find fun. If you have fun killing more rats, then do that. If you have fun earning more ISK from the loot/salvage then to that instead.
As for your salvaging ship, try to get more tractor beams on there, I have found that getting the wrecks in range is the greater limiting factor. If you are finding that salvaging is taking too long, train the Salvaging skill more to increase the success rate of your scans.

The question you have to ask is how much isk are you making by spending the time to salvage. With everything in EVE you have to do the (Time)/(Reward) math.
Salvaging IMO is like free isk just waitting to be taken.
I will be honest and say that salvaging level 1 or 2 missions will not net you alot... once you get to level 3 or 4 missions, I would salvage everything you can. Also remember that you have to invest in your skills, train your salvaging skill to at least 4. ----------------------- Nightmarcher CEO -XIII INTERSTELLAR LEGION

Is there a way to increase tractor beam range? --------------------------------------

You would need a marauder class ship, they get a bonus to tractor beam range (100%, making 40km range)
That's more of a long term goal if you plan on making this chara a mission runner.
I suppose this must be my sig. I'll do something cool with it eventually. |

Maurader or Orca
The first has extreme skill requirements and price tag. You will be blasting through level 4's before you can afford or fly one of them.
The second has half the skill and ISK requirement, but also has half the number of high slots. I have only found it useful when flown by an alt supporting a traditional slavager.
Best bet is to control how wide spread the wrecks are in the first place, then bookmark a wreck near the middle of the cluster.

The way I usually do it is to just sit in one spot and take target a single vessel in a given group...even if it is way out of range, they will still aggro and come to you. I make sure they are within 20km before I blow them up. Dont know if it works with missiles (haven't tried it), but you can aggro this way with turrets easy.
Afterwords, I have all my wrecks stacked in a neat 20km pile around me and just start tractoring them in and processing them. I've been doing this with level 3s now for a while and it works really well.
You'll need a decent tank to do this if the enemy NPCs have medium or long range weapons. Blasters/Pulse Lasers/Autocannons obviously wouldn't work either.

And this is why I have an alt do all the work...providing he doesn't pull aggro when warping in...hmm.... ----------------------------------- "What can go wrong, will go wrong." |
