I've finally reached the point where I'm considering the purchase of a battleship. I plan to use my battleship for high- and low-security mining as well as PvE. It will take me roughly an equal amount of time to train for either Gallente or Amarr.
That said, the number of turrets and drone capacity are identical on the Arma and Mega. I realize that I'm comparing Tier 1 and Tier 2 battleships, but I've been reading really good things about the 'Geddon (especially with megapulse lasers) and I'm wondering if that wouldn't be the better choice. I enjoy blaster setups but really don't know how wise/viable that is against 750k battleship rats - it sounds like the Mega has cap issues when used this way. And seeing as the 'Geddom seems to be an all-around good performer, is there any justification for spending an extra 40 mil on the Mega?
I would really appreciate some opinions on this, as it seems that both ships could fit my needs quite well.

I'd first ask how serious you are about mining and where your primary source of isk comes from.. If your answer is mining go for 'Geddon, as it will be easier to train for the best mining ship there is, and will be for some time: the Apocalypse. Both really aren't bad ships, but if your thinking about training/purchasing for a mega you might as well get an apocalypse, it is only slightly more expensive then a Megathron and much more viable under current game mechanics.

Edited by: Marcus Aurelius on 12/08/2004 07:40:34 The mega is a much better combination of damage dealing with tanking, or range. The mega has a drone advantage. The arma has the ranged gankage factor that the mega only has at very short range.
An arma has the mega pulses yes, awesome weapons on these shipd due to the insane damage (for a tier1). The downside of a full-out megapulse setup is nearly no defense.
The mega however can combine an offense that is either stronger (blasters) with a strong defense, or an offense that has about equal dot (full-out long range rail setup) with equal defenses as the megapulse arma, but will have a range advantage.
So imo the mega > the arma for pve. Mining: mega> arma, cause of drones. PvP: arma> mega due to relative expendability. Their damage potential is about the same afaik. The mega has the downside of being best at either long range (50km+) or very short range while the arma does it's thing at medium range, which is most usefull.
edit: oh, and of course the arma has the upside of being one step below the apoc, which might just be the best (allround) BS ingame atm.
However, keep in mind that the arma with megapulses is tha flavour of the month for pvp, it won't last long before people figure out how to take advantage of their weak defenses, or if that doesnt help, before ccp figures out it needs a nerf.

Megathron drone bay: 2500m^3 Armageddon drone bay: 2500m^3
Neither has a drone advantage.

If you go for the Arma, make sure you have decent laser skills Amarr BS to 4 is a must.
Very good Engeneering skills to keep up w/ cap usage from weapon and defense. Arma isn't a well rounded ship, you have to sacrifice you defense for good offense, so make sure you can kill fast, coz you wont last long. You won't have this problem with Apoc or Mega (both are well rounded for offense & defense).
If you are already trained in hybrids, I'd stay with a Megathron, awesome and fun to fight in if you like close combat

Amarr ships are good for mining. Megathrons are Good for mining, rat hunting and PvP. The tracking and Damage bonuses are insane on the Mega.

the apoc is still the best miner get it work in an ark/bis field and buy all the other 'fun' bs you want afterward.

I can use most ships and always hunt in a Megathron and can do 1000-1400/5 sec at 100 km. Mining is usually a Dominix with 13 harvies pulls in 56 bist/min.
However, if I were at your stage, I would go with the Armageddon because as a tier 1 ship it is half the cost of the mega, insurance is much less, and it is an excellent miner and with mega-pulses (the gun of the moment) is an excellent PvE ship. You just cant go wrong with a Armageddon now.

I would recomend u comparing both ships of each race Arma/apoc v domi/megathron and decide wich one u are more interesting in. Considering u are mostly thinking of mining and npc hunting all those ships will serve u well. I for one use blasters on domi and solo 1x arma 1mill in bounty + 2x 750k apocs + extra. If u got the training, experiance and the right setups u can do this on all ships. Try to weight the strenghts and weekness of each ship of the rases and decide after that.
Must say though that the apoc for exsample is like the perfect ship atm, awsome cap, best miner (domi is though simular in qualites as a miner imho) awsome grid and a blaster type weppons that work on decently long range allso. Gives u great firepower and tanking abilities that are unmatched atm atleast if u compare firepower/tanking v others firepower/tanking. Amarrs have allways been solid choise but then again I¦ve allways found gallente more interesting
