Edited by: Doctor Penguin on 05/03/2009 15:32:07 I always forget how hard it is to get Linux up and running. At the moment, I'm running on Ubuntu 8.04. I've been trying to get my Radeon up and running, so I can see how well EVE runs via Linux. The first time I installed Ubuntu, I went via the Hardware Driver tab to get my ATI driver and then Ubuntu refused to go to the login page on startup... So now I've reinstalled Ubuntu and am downloading the 10 months worth of patches, I'm beginning to wonder how anybody who has used Linux is sane!
Now to learn the secrets of the sudo command to get my ATI drivers installed!
Anybody else use Ubuntu/Linux in general? How long is it going to take before I have the entire OS set up? ________________________________________________

It is if you're a noob and I am a RIGHT NOOB! While I understand Linux is 'better' than Windows I just can't get my head round it. yeah I'm stupid. On top of that Linux isn't good for gaming and that's where Linux kills my interest.

Will do! Ubuntu have their own support forums too, might post there if the problems reappear.
It's fun though. Everything just runs faster than XP programs. ________________________________________________

I tried installing Ubuntu but failed. It was whining something about my floppy disk drive, that happens to be in my closet and I haven't had that thing plugged since 2005 or something? Anyway, I disabled the floppy stuff from BIOS and tried again, but then it started whining about my dvd drive or HD, can't remember which one.
I gave up. Next time I'll just install Gentoo again if I want linux.

I have a Gentoo (minimal) live CD here...
It refuses to play nice with my wireless though every time I get it to connect it seems to kill the router... ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |

Gentoo is well known for being a beast to work with. ____________________

It works! And it only took 3 installs and a change of graphics card to do so!
Now my EVE premium client installer is informing me that it's failed it's integrity test... ________________________________________________

It depends upon the distro that you use. For me, setting up Ubuntu takes just a little longer than XP/Vista to set up.
Something to consider about your driver problem, though, is that there are 2 ATI Linux Drivers - a free (as in speech) version, and a non-free (as in speech) version. Ubuntu has been designed to use the free (as in speech) driver by default. You will probably have to use the "restricted-manager" to enable the non-free (as in speech) driver. The main difference between the two, as far as you are concerned, is that the free (as in speech) version is only capable of 2d acceleration, while the non-free (as in speech) is similar in capabilities to the windows driver.
In order to play EVE, or use compiz-fusion (something else that you will probably want to look into, as compiz-fusion is totally awesome), you will need the non-free (as in speech) driver. Sick and tired of me saying free (as in speech)? Blame the Free Software Foundation for using such confusing terminology.

Well, I got overall graphical errors with the ATI card, whether with the normal or the restricted drivers. So I swapped out for a Geforce and it's all running a-ok now.
It's been almost 9 hours since I began and I'm still not on EVE. Thanks to the ridiculously slow classic client download, it's going to take even longer. ________________________________________________

So what you're saying is there is a version I have to pay for? Well I am outraged! ---------- This post brought to you by the worst PVP'er in Eve |

If you think Ubuntu is hard then try LFS... that is "nintendo hard".
As for the post a couple above mine I assume he means:
"Free" = Open source "Not Free" = Closed source
"Not Free" != "costs money" in this instance ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |

buy a junk computer to learn linux on. you really need a working computer so you can search google to solve your problems. it also cuts down on frustration since your main computer isn't broken or useless until you get the hangups resolved.
you're going to waste your time if you are switching between millions of distros trying to find one that installs something that works perfectly the first time you start your computer. you'll ultimately have to work through some sort of misconfiguration no matter which one you go with.
