Ahoy there
Before I played Freelancer, (which pointed me in the direction of EvE in June '03) I was never much for sci-fi movies, or space games at all. Of course, this all changed after a few months of EvE, and now after over a year I'm a fulltime sci fi junkie !!
So, just wondering which movies you guys like to watch while playing eve, or just relaxing etc..
Some of the more recent ones that I've watched (some good, some bad)
Event Horizon
K-Pax
Dune
Children of Dune
2010: the year we made contact? (i think is the name)
Contact
Red Planet (and the other mars movies)
Fifth Element (one of my fav's)
BladeRunner
-----------------
That's it off the top of my head, just a few from the last few weeks I have seen. If you have any movies you think I need to see or I won't die a happy man, please fill me in! ____________________

Well, I prefer sci fi books, since sci fi movies usually is the same old plot, but in space.
I have to say that Bicentennial Man is the best sci fi movie I've seen. But I might be forgetting a few movies.
TV series is better at making good sci fi. Star Trek is good, I prefer the original series, and then Enterprise.
Other good series would be Farscape, Andromeda, Space: Above and Beyond (though that was a bit of marines in space a la Starship Troopers).
But I'm sure I'm forgetting some in that category as well.

Great, all good suggestions thx guys
Im a huge star trek fan, so I figured I better not even mention it that alone would need its own thread along with Star Wars
Im noticing "Pitch Black" is comming up amongst the recommendations, I'll grab it next time, I always pass it in the store thinking, bah that doesn't look too spacey. K so Pitch Black is next on my list
What's "the Arrival" about in a nutshell? What year is the story set in?
Ok one last question, Chronicles of Ri**** (sp?) is that out on DVD/video yet? Was playing in theatres last I heard.
right keep em comming gents! all good feedback

Edited by: Darrin Tobruk on 13/08/2004 00:37:39 Pitch Black is good, and I even liked the Chronicals of Rid**** (the sequal to Pitch Black which bombed at the box office).
All the Star Wars movies, althought the last two not as much.
Star Trek II and VI are my favorites from the franchise.
Does Spaceballs count as sci-fi?
Stargate (the movie, series rocks as well, but we're talking movies)
Alien and Aliens
Can't think of anything else, atm. _______________________________________________ Eris Discordia: On the scale of funny and constructive it scores low, real low. |

Arrival, The (1996) Zane Ziminski is fired from NASA after picking up unidentified signals from a distant location in space. His curiosity soon turn to sheer terror as he travels to Mexico, where a series of unexplained events lead him to believe that there are aliens all over the world. He gathers evidence to support this theory but will he ever have the chance to broadcast the 'facts' alive?
Second Arrival, The (1998) After Zane Ziminski is found dead five people received envelopes with details of an alien invasion. This group of five includes 3 scientists, Zane's brother Jack, and a reporter. Quickly, the group is down to three and then Jack and Bridget, the reporter. With a small piece of alien technology, they must escape from the aliens, who take human form, and try to convince others of the existence of aliens.
BIG Nutshell :P

Well I grew up with old starwars, I read a comic book, then I was nuts when I saw first movie (I was like 5 or 6). So starwars were my main movies when I grew up. Nowadays, the movie I dig most has to be Bladerunner. --

Equilibirum is COOL , very dark but also very actiony
Of Course The Matrix series
Bladerunner is a must (ideally Directors cut)
Event Horizon
The Thirteenth Floor was ok too
The New Battlestar was pretty impressive effects wise
So HMV consider Andy Williams and Dean Martin to be "easy listening" do they? Tell that to my mate Dave, he's been deaf for 20 years.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!
Star Trek VI: Undiscovered Country
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
Fifth Element
The Matrix (first one only, both the sequels were terrible)
Most Godzilla (old) and Gamera (old and new) movies
Back to the Future Trilogy
And they arent movies, but i also like Farscape, Star Trek DS9, Space: Above and Beyond, Babylon 5 and a couple of its TV movies, Stargate SG1 and Red Dwarf.
Plus, i like sci-fi type cartoons/anime like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Robotech, Patlabor... dont get to see that many of them though.

I thought the latest start trek, nemesis was pretty damn sweet. That great big ship the picard clone has is fu<kin awesome. Any chance the devs can make me a 1 off copy for eve?
Alien + aliens without a doubt. Matrix 1 was good, the other 2 were pretty sh!t and let it down.
Not that much of a star wars fan, theyre good but not great.

I loved that movie Dark City with rufus sewell in it. It was just something so different from what you usually see at the time that it came out. Another I liked for the same reason, but, many people I know just hated it, was Minority Report with tom cruise. Oh, and I can't forget one of my all time favs, and the movie that got me interested in sci-fi more than any other, all those years ago, was Disney's The Black Hole.

Star Wars (non remastered original trilogy, George Lucas post 1990 is the Devil), Bladerunner, Total Recall (Quaaaaaaiiid), Spaceballs , Aliens. Probably my absoloute favourites, bound to remember some more later hehe.
Babylon 5 and Farscape are the best TV shows by a looong way. ------------------------------------------------ I've always owned Kehmor, cheap as chips off Ebay

this thread rocks ... all awesome suggestions and most defenitley the right group of people to be asking!
- Yea I saw the Sci-Fi remake of Battlestar Galactica, was well done I think. Jolly good show. I have trouble understanding the Stargate episodes, but the movie itself is one of my favorites too (along with fifth element)
- Whats Outland about? (set in the future in space? or more so modern times on earth?)
- I took up Iceblock's recommendation on The Arrival I and II, in fact just got back from the rental place, this thread made me charged up to go get some movies I picked up 2001: Space Odyssey, Pitch Black (which i understand is sort of a prequel to Chronicles of Ridd1ck, but it's still playing in theatres), the Ninth Gate, and Close Encoutners of the 3rd kind. Oh and Kill Bill Vol2 (off subject). So what the heck do I watch first? I enjoy movies that do make you think, sort of like in the end of one of those mars movies where they claim that (dna) or whatever made it from mars and began life on earth (in the end scene)... stuff like that I really enjoy.
- Mulholland Drive, is this under drama or action? (since you said it wasn't quite sci fi, but did make you use your noodle you said, so I'll look it up)
ahhhh there's so many questions and reply's I want to give out to this thread and all of you's so I'll stop now.
Just wondering about an eve movie, what that would be like, oh man dont get me started. All the millions in hollywood wasted on idiotic pictures, just think if that funding went into an eve: the second genesis motion picture ____________________

Outland is quite a good film its set on a moon of saturn ( titan if i remember right ) and stars sean connery as a new sherif on a minning base where the "company" is supplying drugs to the workers to make them work harder but the side effects make them a bit crazy, connery investigates this but the company try to kill him thats about it really

Tremors is more of an action movie; not really sci-fi, imo. It's unfortunate that two of the three sequals were all straight to video garbage, and the other was a bad sci-fi channel movie. _______________________________________________ Eris Discordia: On the scale of funny and constructive it scores low, real low. |

I read some where that the writers came up with the idea for Chronicals of Rid**** since there was no plausable way to get Rid**** back on that hell hole of a planet during a total eclipse. _______________________________________________ Eris Discordia: On the scale of funny and constructive it scores low, real low. |

Without a shadow of a doubt, thes best sci-fi film is: ALIENS
Closely followed by: Alien Alien 3 Predator Predator 2 Fifth Element Bladerunner Contact
And, I don't think any0one mentioned it yet: Total Recall!
Tales from the EVE Cluster |

I love Bladerunner, Eve was actually made the Bladerunner world in mind. Anyone remember Tyrell Corporation? :P
I've always been a big fan of Star Wars, I think the people are sort of overevaluating how good the old movies were though, the new movies (especially the second one) are very good, they might not be as good and original as the old ones were 25 years ago but still, they are very good (apart from Hayden Christiansen, ofcourse). I would have to put episodes V, VI and II as my favorites. Also the new cartoon series, Clone Wars, are something everyone should see.
I'm not a big fan of Aliens, just not for me. However, I absolutely love Starship Troopers, I just wish they made a decent sequel.
2005.04.25 16:40:42 combat Your 1400mm Howitzer Artillery II perfectly strikes LawrenceNewton [WARAG], wrecking for 2706.9 damage.

i would only agree with this when watched in the context of MST3K the movie.
That reminds me of a time back in high school where my physics teacher wanted to show us his favorite old movie. Very bad idea considering most of us had seen it on MST3K.
He got pretty mad at us, needless to say. ----------- Fighting for the ideals of freespace, posthuman ethics, and rock & roll. |

I would love to see any (and all) of Asimov's Foundation series made into a film and a story called 'The man who used the universe' by Allan Dean Foster (where i get my char name from)
However, my fave sci-fi film would probably be Brazil. ------------------------------ Refiner, Manufacturer, Researcher, Hunter, Adviser, Hauler, anything but miner! |

Ok Muholland Drive is NOT Sci Fi, sorry if I mislead but yes if you want to scratch your head after a movie watch it. Its most likely in the Drama section of your store.
Also I pity you for getting out The Ninth (trying to keep a straight face) Gate .....its under my recomendations for worst film. Such a great idea, such a ****e movie
gl
So HMV consider Andy Williams and Dean Martin to be "easy listening" do they? Tell that to my mate Dave, he's been deaf for 20 years.
