No innuendo intended (who am I kidding, the third person to respond to this will likely crack a joke), I recently reinstalled Freespace 2 on my computer and was saddened to see that it simply wouldnt play properly. Can anyone recomend a -modern- space combat sim that requires the use of a joystick?
Im thinking of games along the lines of X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Freespace 2 and the like. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

There is not much choice at the moment, but I can definatly recommend X3. Either start with Reunion which should be available at a Budget price,or play the sequel X3: Terran Conflict.

X3 is a fun game but you don't really need a joystick for it.
IMO Joysticks are best for actual flight/combat sim games, of which there aren't any space ones (made recently). IL-2 Sturmovik online with a good joystick is great fun.

Starlancer
one of the best joystick games of all time IMO. very good controls, a number of different ships, and a great storyline. my 1 big problem was the battlechatter, your copilot always had 1 of 3 things to say after you killed a guy.
This is also the prequel to freelancer, if you have played that, also a great game. its too bad digital anvil closed

"It is the year 2160. Mankind has colonized the solar system and two political entities have emerged: the Alliance consisting of American, Australian, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, British and German forces, and The Coalition of Russian, Chinese and Middle-Eastern interests."
Not to pick on this game in general, but instead, all of them, the whole "Russia/China/Middle East vs America/EU" is really getting me ****y.
I'm sure it's a good game, and I'll probably pick it up at some point on sale, but I want to see a game where America are the evil totalitarian bastards: and this is coming from an American. Not that I'm a patriot, anyways...
Edit: Where can I download this game? Don't want to wait for shipping...

Game never specifies that they're evil or anything, just that they're fighting over something. I'm sure said Coalition people think you dirty Americans are the real oppressors, too.

yeah, its another of the sterotypical "ruskies are ebil, m'kay?" but if you look past that (which i do admit, gets annoying at times) its a great space sim game.
also, if you look around, they are usually at super discount prices. ive broken my disc sets twice (ugh) and rebought em. the 1st rebuy was for $5, the 2nd for $3.

Official site for that one And yeah, it's great and really needs a joystick. There's nothing more relaxing than firing up some custom mission with friendly capital ships and no enemies, and just fly around those omega destroyers in your starfury ♥
But seriously, you have to try Independence War 2 if you're playing eve. Realistic flightmodel, lots of freedom and the best of all: piracy! You start as a kid trapped in some mining corporation, witness your father dying to those bastards, escape and so on. Later you'll get caught, jailed and escape as an adult with some friends and become the yarring pain in the arse of those huge corporations that run the universe.
