Finding a suitable system with an available moon for a research POS is like finding fat Veld belts it seems. Obviously the first choice is a system with the POS and your office together. Here is the advice part. Is it just plain dumb to have a research POS in a system with no stations, therefore risking my BPOs in the event I do get destroyed? In Hi Sec, what is the frequency of that happening. Is it rare or is it a daily thing? Of course, near Death Star defenses would be in order, but even then, is it worth it?
Thanks!! _______________________________________________

Is it dumb to put a pos in an empire system with no stations. Well, you've got 24 hour notice before start of war dec. If you take two days out of eve you could be VERY unlucky. You're only limited by what standings you have so you might have to wander the unbeaten track, although as long as there's a station and you can afford the rent (if it's that unbeaten then the rents should be low).
I hope CCP comes up with a plan to "fix" abandoned empire pos's soon.

In one system that would have fit perfectly, 10 offline POSs taking up real estate. What a waste.
Do abaondon POSs show up on a scan? I jump into system, do a scan, find 30 Moons and 20 control towers, but when I warp around, no empty moons? I hope Apocrypha spreads things out a little so there is room to breathe. Am I asking too much?
Thanks! _______________________________________________

When it comes to the offline POS crap, I just pony up the dough to a merc corp to take it down.
Sometimes 300m is a small price to pay for much needed real estate. |

This is one fix they put in years ago.
Declare war. Shoot it.
Problem solved.

This approach has always worked well for me.

Well it's seems kinda silly that those POS are allowed to stay there while "rent" is not being payed. IMO the sovereign NPC faction should have their fleet shoot these down ...

It's not like there's a critical shortage of totally empty moons in highsec systems with stations with free office slots... you're just not looking hard enough. Hint : get a couple of jumps more away from Jita/Motsu/whatever, and DO check all moons.

Tell me just exactly how hard I looked. Sounds like you know! I do check all moons. How else would I see the abandoned CTs? I would like to stay in Caldari space. I would like to mine at least a little. But then there are probably plenty of Fantastic belts around too if I would look harder.
Thanks though to the others for their helpful input.

I think it would be ALMOST impossible (does that make sense, are there degrees of impossibilities or is it binary, yes/no? ) to find a moon in a system with an ice belt and a station that has "reasonable" rent.
I think your best bet would be to take out a pos via a war dec. The only trouble with using a merc corp is that they know where your pos will be, the knowledge of which, they MAY use in the future.

Hi sec pos take down û it happens quite often. We have done it 6 times in last 2 months.
You have 2 options
1 - move and find a place in a corner 2 - destroy someones POS.
Convo me I might help you out..

Have you tried Purjola/Reisen/Ikami/Hampinen ? All 0.5 Forge systems, by the way. I know for sure I have checked just a couple of weeks ago and found enough empty moons there. I am absolutely sure you can find enough moons in the other Caldari regions too.
P.S. Also, abandoned POS ? Just wardec, then show up in a single Abaddon, start shooting, remain semi-AFK while you clear it out, most likely nobody will be bothering you (and it won't even take that long to bring it down solo).

And if you bring it down solo, don't you get all those anchored modules they left behind? Assuming, of course, no one else scoops them up before you do. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

Just out of interest, roughly how long would it take to kill a small offline tower? Any idea?

I second that you didn't look hard enough. There are moons and offices available 3 or 4 jumps from Jita. Did you check Alikara? Jatate? Other systems in those constellations? Another hint: get your standings above 5.0 so you can anchor in .6 and .7; you will have many more choices. Alikara is 2 jumps from Jita, has more than 10 moons available and 5 offices open as of now. It only took me a few minutes to check. It is not the "perfect" place, but it was good enough for me to make a nice profit when I used to run a POS there.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the whole point is why do ya have to look so hard to find a moon when there are moons with offline pos's in the system you want to play in. Why spend days lookin when you can WD one of these clowns and just have their spot. Use it or lose it baby. This is a PVP game (player versus pos)
And most any merc corp will take it down for you very reasonably if you can't do it yourself.

Why bother?
Just deathstar your hisec research POS and put it in a stationless system. Unless they have an absolutely EPIC battleship fleet, know exactly where your POS is, are willing to lose a lot of ships to take it down, AND you don't notice the wardec in time to remove the BPs from it..
What's the problem? As a bonus, you could use the POS as an ore dropoff point and enjoy the fat, juicy roids in the system.

Not sure about 0.5, but in 0.7 this is quite easy, as long as you're willing to go outside the forge.

Protip: Watch how many wardecs happen 2 minutes before the patch downtime, and how many POS's are in reinforced before their owners login post patch ;)
With the BPOs in station, worst case, you lose a POS. With them in the POS some people could lose tens of billions.

While true, the chances of someone
a) Finding your POS in a stationless system,
b) Having enough firepower to blow it up,
c) Knowing how and
d) being able to time it at the perfect time so that you don't pull the expensive **** out
Are incredibly slim.

OK, to put this whole thing to rest, I was going to DeathStar the thing anyway so why not go to the stationless system and use the advantages stated above? That's the plan and thanks to everyone (except Isaihlemm) for the the well thought out answers.
BTW, I did get a few replies for help taking down an offline POS. One response from an owner that said he would sell his spot for 1 Bil (when I could have it removed for 250 mil). One other guy, and this is good, said he owns the system and because I was polite (?) he would remove a POS and I can have the spot for free, as a stern reprimand to the owner. Of course, he is in a corp of 4, is a year old, and in no alliance so....
Anyhow thanks to all. _______________________________________________
