I know there was another thread on the new warp effect, but I feel like it was buried to quickly.
So, there is a new warp tunnel effect. Nice! Well, kinda nice. Why go to all this trouble of creating even more immersion and leave out the one thing we see the most. The warp tunnel. roids look better, So does the backgrounds in w-space (I am sure this is the beginnings of changing all space backgrounds to updated texture maps), weapons effects look excellent too. Why in the world would you make a warp tunnel effect that makes you feel like you aren't even moving?
The new effect has grounds to become very cool, but its just not there. I enjoy the "warping" patterns that slide around you but the edges are cut and dry. They feel very super imposed over the screen. Almost flat even though there shape lends to something 3D around you. Due to EVE having zero AA this is even more apparent on smaller screens. There is also a second layer that is more subdued behind the warping. This effect is way more interesting I suppose because it feels apart of the environment.
Things that I would add to this is an effect to break up the warp effect. Something that makes it feel more particle like. This would integrate the effect into the space and not leave you feeling like someone put a boring photoshop effect around your ship. The next thing I would do is add a bend to the perspective from the middle of the screen to the edges. A Special Relativity Aberration effect is what I'm thing of. More color shifting would be nice too.
Also the camera shake why while going to warp was a nice effect. Where did that go?
All in all, i prefer the OLD warp effect because I felt as though I was moving somewhere and it felt integrated with my surroundings. You don't have to make the effect super crazy, just make it have the love that you made the other new art with.

What IMO the warp effect should look like (2:45 onwards)

So... Basically, when warping, all space around you should appear to stretch away from you into infinity while Doppler shifting into the infrared and then going dark into a single point of light at the center of your view until you stop. At which point the view would snap back to normal.
While I will admit that would look cool, from a game play perspective it makes little sense to have the image of the world around you follow the laws of Special Relativity if the actual FUNCTION of the ship does not. (IE: time slows to a crawl while warping. So it takes 10 seconds to warp from your point of view, but to everyone else it take 10 YEARS.) Needless to say, actually following the laws of relativity would make game play impossible.

I think looking cool is kind of the point I had. Its not that it needs to be science accurate, but immersion is nice. As it stands now, the warp tunnel is just a lame effect on a transparent layer around my ship.

I must agree that the warping effect we will have with the expansion pretty much sucks, some of the other effects too, oh well...

I think the point is it looks much cooler than what we have now (or on sisi) AND is more realistic too. Win-Win imo.

I just don't like the new "gradual" effect of comming out of warp. In the interview he made it out to be a feature, but warping isn't supposed to be "just going very fast" it's supposed to be warping space, or changing phase. Like diving into, or climbing out of, a pool of water.
I like the new effects, but the long pause at the end where I wonder what the heck is going on and why my warp stopped but I'm still not at the gate yet, that doesn't feel right. --

forgive my ignorance in EVE lore, but what exactly is the science behind warping ingame? is it similar to the Star Trek definition, or perhaps an alternate dimension where the rules don't apply (hyperspace, etc). surely it's not just accelerating past the speed of light, given how many other problems that incurs.

In my opinion for warp effects they concentrate too much on an environment for warping wheras I'd prefer some effects on the ship when in warp.
Make the ship fuzzy and have motion blue trailing off it while having a less crap pattern in the warp effect.
As for the warp tunnel, I'd take anything over a basic rubbishy glass/water shader effect right now.

I must be running in a different mode or something because the warp effect on sisi looks freakin awesome compared to the one on tq. In fact it's one of my favorite new changes! ---

You should explore the Backstory -> Scientific Articles section in your friendly left hand menu.
