Originally by: Tasko Pal In the hopes that it saves someone else some time, if you're planning to install the bleeding edge, latest NVIDIA drivers, there's pretty good instructions here. If you don't follow such instructions, you can have all sorts of interesting, time-consuming (5 hours!) things happen to you like multiple conflicting nvidia drivers. If you do have peculiar problems, it helps a great deal to know where they log the error messages for your system so you can google those messages. Google is my IT copilot!
Actually the latest 185.xx drivers are much easier and intelligent.
Just use envy-ng -t to uninstall the drivers. reboot. ctrl + alt + f2, login, sudo /etc/init.d/gdm (or kdm) stop, chmod 755 /path/to/installer/file, sudo sh NVIDIA(press tab to autocomplete), just hit ok and yes for everything reboot, and enjoy.
It worked like a charm, the installer now scans for left over driver files and properly builds a kernel module.

I switched to the Nvidia beta driver (185.13).
Works far better for me than the 180.X series of drivers.
I can now play eve with compiz, all high/on and interval immediate an almost never fall below 50fps.
NV 8800 Ultra Debian testing
But Warning: its BETA, so there may be strong issues with your computer. Don't hold me responsible, especially if you don't know exactly what you do.

Has someone got it running on an ATi card? Im through the third time trying to compile and install wine 1.1.17 with the patch but with no success. Well, the game works fine, I just cant see the models.
I got the 9,2 driver from ATI for the Radeon 4850 running on Ubuntu 8.10.
Im not too good with all this technical stuff but Im went through all the steps in this forum and on wines without getting any errors. It feels as if Im soooooo close to get it to work yet something must have gotten wrong.

Works on ATI 3850 and 3870.
Add the following to your /home/user/.wine/user.reg:
[Software\\Wine\\Direct3D] "DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl" "MaxFragmentUniforms"="1024" "MaxVaryings"="52" "MaxVertexUniforms"="1024" "PixelShaderMode"="enabled" "VertexShaderMode"="hardware" "VideoMemorySize"="128"
Try if it works. If not and wine and catalyst 9.2 are installed correctly, then try to look up the correct values for your card using winehq, google oder glxinfo -l

Is there a way to verify that Wine and Catalyst are intalled correctly? I didnt get any errors and since I can get into the game I assume Wine works. The CCC works, too.

tried many guides to get the station and ship modules to work and not much luck... on 64bit at the end combination of two methods worked. downloaded sources for 1.17 extracted on desktop.. placed patch into same dir patched using p1 and then followed readme in this folder - i thinkit was config make and so on.. but then the install would not work.. so seen this thread and the fact about pasting the dll file into wine dir.. and that did the trick.. so thank you pimp- i can see again:)

Mine is doing the blackscreen thing on my laptop as well. mobile 9700.
I get fixme:d3d_shader:shader_glsl_load_constants >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from glUniform4fvARB @ glsl_shader.c / 410 fixme:d3d_shader:shader_glsl_select >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from glUseProgramObjectARB @ glsl_shader.c / 3315
when running from cli, I'm guessing either my patch to .1.17 didn't work, or I'm screwing up the registry entries. Or maybe I'm confused about what the patch Does exactly.
[Software\\Wine\\Direct3D] 1240428288 "DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl" "MaxFragmentUniforms"="512" "MaxVaryings"="44" "MaxVertexUniforms"="512" "PixelShaderMode"="enabled" "VertexShaderMode"="hardware" "VideoMemorySize"="128"
glxinfo -l GL_MAX_VERTEX_UNIFORM_COMPONENTS_ARB = 512 GL_MAX_VARYING_FLOATS_ARB = 44
I have no idea what the max fragments thing would be...so guessing as the earlier post had the same value as maxvertexuniforms...I tried 512.
Heh this is kinda fun.

Im running wine 1.0.1 and trying to get the latest patch (86756) to work.
it worked for the previous patch but when i installed updated it stopped working. i moved my ~/.wine to ~/.wine-old and started over. and accidentally deleted the .wine-old (i know smooth me)
i have added the d3dx9-36 to the system32 file, i have even overridden the dnsapi file in wine configuration and im down to this error
hermdog@lindog:~$ env WINEPREFIX="/home/hermdog/.wine" wine explorer /desktop=EVE3,1024x768 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe" err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} not registered err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} could be created for context 0x1 fixme:heap:HeapSetInformation 0x8d0000 0 0x33fcac 4 fixme:d3d:IWineD3DImpl_FillGLCaps OpenGL implementation supports 32 vertex samplers and 32 total samplers fixme:d3d:IWineD3DImpl_FillGLCaps Expected vertex samplers + MAX_TEXTURES(=8) > combined_samplers fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x338ff4,0x00000000), stub! fixme:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_ValidateDevice (0x14bce0) : stub fixme:wtsapi:WTSRegisterSessionNotification Stub 0x30026 0x00000000 fixme:imm:ImmReleaseContext (0x30026, 0x140960): stub fixme:wtsapi:WTSRegisterSessionNotification Stub 0x30026 0x00000000
the the wine desktop goes black, which, to me, means eve is trying to start. but it hangs.
when i close the window I get this error
fixme:dsound:DllCanUnloadNow (void): stub wine: Unhandled exception 0x40000015 at address 0x330073:0x10075ee7 (thread 0019), starting debugger...
anyone have any ideas on where to go from here?

Have you tried different versions of wine? I had same problem with 1.1.2x, but 1.1.19 with this patch got it to work.

My system: Athlon XP 3200+, GeForce 7600GT 512M, Nvidia driver 180.51, Slackware 12.2, kernel 2.6.27.7, wine 1.1.21, eve-online 6.12.88974.
Turns out that I don't have to patch and recompile wine anymore. I ran glxinfo -l and found the line GL_MAX_VARYING_FLOATS_ARB = x, multiplied x by 4, and added the result to the "MaxVaryings"="y" line in user.reg in my wine directory. In my case x = 32 so y = 128. This is from reading the ATI hacks page in the top sticky post.
Thanks to all the help here.
