Edited by: Henchworthy on 11/03/2009 12:50:10 Im thinking of going mining in 0.6 - 0.7 space with my retriever. I know from past experience you get the odd rat or two every now and again. What do i need to defend myself. I have a couple of newbies in my corp aswell who want to come too but they are only in rookie ships. If i get some decent drones will they keep us all safe enough?

I use 4 T1 light drones, and they are more than enough even in 0.5 Nowhere to run Nowhere to hide You got to kill To stay alive |

I mine in a retriever in 0.6, I used 4x scout drones which done the job very well.
I think the retriever has 25m3 of drone space, so if you can only have 4 drones, one of them can be a medium drone for extra protection
As long as you send out the drones as soon as the rats turn up, they shouldn't get to your armor.

Edited by: Seraph Castillon on 11/03/2009 14:45:16 Don't use medium scout drones. They take to long to kill the frigats and that's basicly all you'll be getting in 0.7. Use light scout drones and use the ones that hit on the weakness of the type of rats that spawn in your system.
If your skills allow it, fit a medium shield extender in the mid slot. If not, try a small shield booster.

you dont need to go in .7 as velspar is the most lucrative thing to mine. And about jetcan, it is easily done as if you meet ore stealers, usually just jump in a quiet system and you wont be bother at all by them.

The rats in high sec are not very dangerous.
like some people posted above, fit a shield booster and some resist amps (for whichever faction rats are in your area).
Yes veldspar is good for profit. Gets boring though. So go down to 0.5 space or anything in between and have fun mining omber or kernite.
Just don't AFK at this early stage. Don't shoot any can flippers as they will just shoot you back. best thing to do would be just warp back when you are full.

forgot 2 things:
- 0.7 and lower, allows anchoring cans. So can flippers usually stay on 0.8 or higher, where people is forced to use jetcans.
- lower security, better belts. Ofcourse you can find veldspar over 1.0 but rocks size will be like ****
