With 355 in Local the lag and stutter is worse than Jita with 800+ under Trinity. In addition, the server dropped my connection 3 times in 12 minutes. Mission running is hopeless; it lost the keystroke to turn on my LAR and by the time I got a target icon my shields and armor were gone. This release is essentially unplayable.

Perhaps after getting the myriad Apocrypha Release 0.0 issues addressed, CCP will consider abandoning this "one-server" experiment. Great in it's day, but I think it looks like the beast is a little too big to just keep throwing RAM-SANs at it. How about, in addition to DATA clusters, they create independent server clusters, with one server per region? That's sure to help with customer complaints, as there is very little ability for people in one region of space to interact with another (other than chat)...

Surely CCP uses a different server for the patch downloads, or at least a dedicated server node. So downloading should not affect game execution. The number of players is pretty much the same. So what would be special about the day after a patch that would cause horrendous lag?
Or are you just suggesting that initial patches are always buggy?

Since the number of players is the same, I don't think this accounts for why today w/ Apochypha is laggy compared to two days ago w/ Revelations.
However, I agree with the basic point. In the long term the EVE hub & spoke client/server configuration is not scalable for things like PvP or market hubs. That configuration is fine for something like an airline reservation system but it sucks for an applciation like EVE where the clients must interact with each other.
Providing multiple servers will help in the short term because other regions won't be affected and the load of those regions will be removed from the region with the bandwidth problem. But it really won't help much in the region with a huge fleet PvP or in market hubs like Jita because it is the clients in a single system that are creating the bandwidth logjam as all of their interactions are funneled through the <local> server.
