Originally by: CCP Incognito I have my preference but I am not going to say here.
But I will say this, having both is unlikely as it would involve maintaining two sets of code, and in the long run that eats up developer time and causes bugs. We don't have enough spare cycles on our UI programmers as it is :(
I think if enough people hated it! It would be back to the old window and goodbye to the new.
As already mentioned - please just add the old one and don't update it. I like the new window, ditching the old one entirely is silly though. Add it and if you change anything that is not compatible with the old window (for new ships or something similar) just force people to use the new window for those parts. ___________________

Please at least give us the option to disable the damned double ship rendering! not all of us have twin cutting edge GPUs and dual CPU motherboards, to throw for you to play with and abuse!
EDIT: Instead of that rendering inside the ring, let us see the statistics rather than have extra space for that on the right side, ok?

At least let us drag mods into the centre and have them be fitted as they were before. Having to carefully position any hangar or cargo windows around fitting so that they dont cover any module slots is a recurring PITA

i don't understand the middle of the window.
I find the redundancy of the ship in the middle of the fitting array to be annoying.
I don't see why you would need to see your ship there in the first place, even with tech 3 you can just move the window over and see in all its glory your pretty billion isk toy. which is a better view than the small view in the window.
The previous fitting window was simple and arrayed in an intuitive manner.
Also the vocabulary of eve no longer fits with the new window, there are no more highs, mids, and lows. ive had to clear up confusion with new players because people still use those words to describe slot location. now in order to be more accurate you either have to assign them appropriate numbers to correspond with the quantity of lines in the empty fitting box, or you have to assign a description of the location using some kind of radial descriptor, i chose to use clocks when helpling this new fella.
to me, its an upgrade that made the fitting window more complicated, less intuitive, and made it harder for new players to understand in conjunction with established vocabulary and practices.

Just adding my 2 isk worth as well, and I can see where people get confused with it BUT I actualy prefer the new fitting screen.
I did ask a few guys I tend to fleet up with and they never mentioned that they don't like it. So I think its just personal preference when someone likes it or not.

QFT
As with the new map it's a case of form taking priority over functionality.
Aside from displaying extra stats and the ability to save fittings which are both superb additions to the functionality of the fitting screen, I find the rest of the changes to be unimpressive.
Does it look cool? Yes. Is it cool to see my ship in the middle? Yes. For about a week anyway. Then it's no longer cool but just a royal pain in the ass.
Some things are used so often that the priority in their design should be that they work so intuitively well that you could use them blindfolded - well, almost
The old fitting screen was defintitely superior to the new one in this respect. If we can't get it back then it would at least be nice to remove the unnecessary fancy clutter from the new one to leave it simpler but functionally more elegant.

At first i hated the fitting window. Now the only change i would like seen made to it is for the charges not to take up the whole mod slot. the charges as a "subslot" before was better.
If you spend about 5 minutes actually studying the window and its features its actually alot better than the previous fitting window. Slot layout is pretty explanatory. highs are high mids are medium right and lows are low right. subs on bottom rigs on 9 oclock left. top left is turret slots still available top right launcher. cpu is blue and PG is red. both cargohold and dronebay is accessable from the bottom left. which means between fitting window and item hanger everything is easily swapable. the stats on the right and their new features are an improvement
I have noticed on slower machines( older laptops) that the fitting window is slow loading. This is an issue with your pc not the game. ..... CCP has to keep eve up-to-date to stay competive with new games. otherwise eve would be a fail, all because a few people refuse to update their pc every 5 years or so.
fixes for slow loading fittings windows: 1)buy a real video card instead of intergrated graphics( they arent meant to play new games on) 2) buy more ram 3) buy a pc that was made this decade.. seriously a dedicated video card will solve 75% of your frame rate issues and having 1 gig mem on a xp system or 2 gigs on a vista system will solve 20% of the other framerate issues. the remaining 5% would be people playing on an outdated laptop that has a cheap processor( IE: celeron or the cheap AMD mobile)

I don't know if you people at CCP have statistics about this, but I'd say the number of unique posters on this forum is extremely low in comparison to the entire EVE player base and thus not at all representative of its predominant opinion. Looking through the topic I'd say that I've seen posts from at least half of these people before. Same goes for almost any topic I read. I doubt more than a couple hundred unique players actually post here on a regular basis. And, as has already been mentioned, people don't post when they are happy with the game - the main reason to come here is to complain about something.
Some people in my corporation also wanted to have the old window back - mostly because the new one was 'new' and took some getting used to. Now, a couple of weeks later, I doubt any of them are particularly interested in getting the old one back - despite the fact that you guys screwed up and delivered it in a completely unfinished state.

UI designs shouldn't be code.
Ultimately there will be code that links the old UI to the rest of the game. One day a change to the game will me made that affects both the old UI and new UI codes, forcing the devs to change some outdated fitting window after all.
And even when it only involves changing some UI design and generating the resulting code somehow, the devs will have to change the old UI somewhere, which costs time which can be better spent fixing other stuff.

That would be like using multiple media players on your computer because the old media player does not play all the file formats you use. It would be more complex for both the devs and the players: the devs would have to keep supporting some old UI in their codebase, and players who like to use the old UI end up using the new one after all to fit their ship subsystems and whatnot. It makes the game interface too complicated... and tbh this is not a valid situation to warrant an exception from the "less = more" software development philosophy (less complexity is less possible trouble).
I'm not really sure why a GPU can't handle a tiny fitting window with one ship model, but can handle the rest of the game... but that would be easily solved by making an on/off switch for that. But don't replicate almost the entire fitting UI for cosmetic reasons.

I'd use the old one.
The new one has some useful features, but the old one was mostly more user-friendly. And the gigantic waste of space that is the 2nd ship render is a gigantic waste of space. How about reducing it by 25% and making the fitting slots bigger, separate the ammo while you're at it. Functionality > bling.
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started. |

I really dont see everyones problem with the new fitting screen, i for one think its awesome. I play eve on a laptop sometimes and i run gfx settings at medium with no problems and the fitting screen works perfectly. The gfx card in my laptop is only a basic card Nvidia 8400m GT 128mb and my laptop was not that expensive.
Any laptop with a dedicated card should have no issues and seriously if people are having problems running the fitting screen face facts update your computer or get a new laptop.
For the people who dont like the fitting screen and want the option to change to the old one, CCP cant stay competitive with other online games if they keep everything the same year after year. Also as someone else said you cant have the old fitting screen and not update it otherwise it would not work when new stuff is added to eve. And seriously CCP has better things to fix then changing something that is perfectly fine.

I'd prefer the old fitting system, as I don't need to be reminded what ship I'm in with a giant, unusable picture of said ship in the fitting screen. If I needed to spin my ship endlessly in circles, I wouldn't open the fitting screen to do it. *** Currently Playing: Trolls from Outer Space Current Equipment: VISAcard chain mail, +2 Amulet of Epic Whine, Self Banstick +2 WTB: +666 E-peen killboard stats |

Another small point: Maybe one day we'll be able to fit ships we're not sitting in. At this point, the little ship in the center becomes more than just a gimmick ;)

Honestly the ONLY USE I have found for that little picture is for fitting tech 3 subsystems, and even then it's purely aesthetic. It's not like you're spraypainting your ship with a spray can or something and you need the window to orient your ship. We all know the only extra models that show up on ships are turrets and mining lasers etc and I'm fairly certain we all know what those look like by now.
It's a gimmick. Period.

Yes please, if you added the ability to drag items to the center of window now, PLEASE allow us to disable/make transparent/find better use for that screen space where it uselessly renders the ship second time

I am currently training a new alt. When I fit a ship with the new window and I get a "insufficient CPU/grid" message when installing a module it is lost unseen most of the time. I constantly need to do try to put on line the module to see what the problem is.
The use CPU/Grid half circle is frankly horrible. Way less visible than before when it change and, as I am not a chameleon, if is not easy to see how it grow when I hover a module with the pointer. Having it moving in 2 different direction in different zones of the screen is a bad idea.

Remove the pic from middle of fitting screen and put the high, med and low slot fittings as they were on the other fitting screen.
