since the patch of apocrypha, my graphics card won't play eve anymore. i went to bestbuy and was in the process of getting a new graphics card, when i found out i also need to change the power converter. is their any way that i can still play eve without spending hundreds of dollars to upgrade my computer?

let me ask a different question, does that sound plausible that you would have to replace the power converter or whatever its called if you install a graphics card? or was that guy at bestbuy just trying to run my bill up?

Edited by: Tanaki Arus on 14/03/2009 03:44:22 what wattage is your power supply right now, and what kind of videocard were you considering? There is no such thing as a power converter, so I am assuming he meant a power supply.
Let me tell you about Best Buy, and similar retail stores... The salespeople that they employ know next to nothing about what they are selling, and they are trained to sell extra things to bring in more money for the store. It's very possible you don't need to upgrade your power supply at all... Also, be aware of what videocards they recommend... They'll probably recommend one of the most expensive ones they have in stock, and it's probably overkill. The best bang-for-buck videocard right now seems to be the Radeon 4850, and I would recommend buying it online from Newegg.com or TigerDirect.com or mwave.com or somewhere similar... It has to be shipped to you, but you'll save some money.
I tried to get a job at Best Buy when I was younger, but as soon as they discovered that I had a vast knowledge of everything computer-related, they turned me away. I don't shop there.

Edited by: Zee87 on 14/03/2009 03:49:21 Please see this thread before you rush out to buy upgrades... It turns out, you can run EVE using this external program. :) So you don't have to upgrade anything in your machine if you don't wish to.

i have a straight out of the factory version dell dimension 3000, and it uses the intergrated graphics chip(not actually a graphics card). i'm not sure what the watts its running, but he just took the cover off and told me i would have to upgrade. will check that thread as well.

They make Molex-to-PCIe connector cables, but Dell likes to cut costs wherever possible so it's possible your PSU might not like a video card that requires extra current, especially if it's new.
The good news is that Dell within the past few years stopped using proprietary crap and you could probably just go out and buy a regular PSU with a six-pin PCIe connector on it and be fine (depending on the brand, but that's another story).
In short: Buy a card and a new PSU of around 450W.

No pci-e here move along ,secondmind im sorry to say your dell dimension 3000 has not an agp slot according to Dell's pdf (motherboard has 865GV chipset),you have to use pci (not pci-ekspres ) cards and PSU is 250W .

Edited by: Zee87 on 14/03/2009 06:49:44 It's possible that the motherboard *might* have an AGP slot (it's easy to spot, it's above the white PCI slots, it would be a brown slot that's shorter than the white PCI slots and set slightly further forward), I think some of the later Dell Dimension 3000's had one... You'll have to take the side panel off and look. If it does have one, you're in luck... Nowadays however, you will only find AGP videocards online. PCI-E is all but standard now, and that is all most retail chains sell now.
However, if EVE ran acceptably before, you could always try that 3D ANALYZE program. There are several threads about it in this forum.
