Not sure this is the right forum, but its Eve-related at least, as Vent is often used as a Eve tool. I had a nightmare setting mine up, but its do-able, here is my experiences with it:
I have a Sennheiser USB headset, running Ubuntu 8.10 Plugging in the headset is no problem for Ubuntu, works right out of the box. Sadly, getting it to run in Wine is another headache, so eventually I found a forum entry from our 'friends at WoW' that helped me through that step: USB headset instructions under ALSA
Now my USB headset worked under Wine, next step was getting Ventrilo up and running. I installed Ventrilo straight off the website without a problem. The GSM codec seems to be the most used, and since I'm running a 64 bit Ubuntu, the msgsm32.acm (which can be downloaded if searched on google, can't link it here) file was not supported by the lastest wine, i had to roll back to wine-1.0.1 to get it to accept it. If you have a version that works with the latest wine, let me know :-)
I copied the file to my windows\system32 folder in wine, and started Vent, which worked. I had to fiddle with the sound settings to get volumes to a level where I wanted, and avoid "Direct Sound" everywhere, it will conflict.
Since I never got used to the VOX, I always use a talk key. Corpmates aparently prefer to filter out body sounds.
I found out the Ventrilo window needs focus to activate this. If Eve is in focus, Vent simply won't read the keystroke. After a good surf, I found a true gem on Ubuntu forums, which is a Python script to parse keystrokes to Ventrilo, its easy to run and does its job well. I even now can use the "magic" buttons on my mouse for Vent.

That python script really is good. I made a copy of it and replaced all occurrences of the word Ventrilo with TeamSpeak and changed the button from A to B and it worked with TeamSpeak too! |

I personally found taht USB headset, with its crummy mixer + subpar support for Alsa in Wine == bad ****
I never got Eve voice or Vent to work with the USB headset.
The solution to my problems was getting this ultra-expensive analog headset,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826106502
and using the built-in sound. Now sound works perfectly with Alsa + EveVoice.

Edited by: Miraqu on 19/03/2009 08:03:28 We tried mumble too but the user and channel management seems far above the average windows-user.
At least half of the testers could install it and another half managed to configure it successfully.
But to be honest: I turned down several offers to join a corp because they used vent. As long as the TS client works I will continue to use this.

It looks like the patches for the gsm issue were put into the git so wine 1.1.18 should work with ventrilo again.

Its worth noting that the audio dropouts people may get seem to be regression related. I get 99% perfect voice out of vent on 1.1.2 and not on any other build of WINE.
