I finally downloaded the new client after three attempts
(apparently the downloader deletes all data if it's interrupted)
and EVE is playing pretty good so far on my laptop. My only
issue so far is the fps when in stations and when flying around
other structures. Even with the level of detail set to lowest
there still seems to be way too much detail on structures. Any
chance of CCP lowering this even further so that it's the bare
minimum? Maybe something closer to the classic models? Is there
anything I can do on my end to increase the fps in stations?

Your not alone... thousands of others have the same issue.. including myself.. and no, CCP does not like us  and its looking like adapt or die..

I would buy a new computer but I spend all my money on EvE subsription.
Same problems as OP, I don't mind 20-30fps fully zoomed out, but in stations thier is no option, so 5.5 - 7.3 fps
I run my tiny Net-Book as Eco warrior as I can, but idling in stations has flame's comming out the cooler.

Yes, I've heard it all before. I realize my laptop can't handle the
latest graphics out there. THAT'S WHY I PLAYED EVE!! It had much
lower requirements than a lot of other games so I had no problems
running it. It still runs pretty well except when I'm in
station. I can at least get around the low fps near other
structures by just zooming out. It doesn't fix it completely but
it helps. I have no options while docked and it's getting a bit
frustrating. The graphics options in game are just not enough,
besides that they're broken. If I try to optimize for best
performance it sets lod to medium, not low. I don't think it's
too much to ask for CCP to lower the level of detail on low
setting even more so that those who played on classic can still
play on premium.

i played on my laptop too and it is just too much. my laptop is 3 years old and i have brought it up to 2 gigs ram and still not good enough to play eve at it's lowest setting. eve dev should make the return back to the non-premium settings. i played with no problems.

I have to admit, i do apreciate this change.
You know, electronic stuff DOES get old very fast, and if you cant play with the eve lite client, (which has really low needs...) you should seriously think of getting a new PC. Not for the sake of gaming ...
You cant tell the whole world to stand still, just because you dont want to go with time...

You can raise you in station FPS with F10 (map view), I get from 6fps to 39fps
missions <10 to 25
