Edited by: Skalgrim Jax on 16/03/2009 20:32:08 hello all,
firstly, yes - I am very new to EVE. I've done the tutorials, gathered some ISK, a couple of ships and am a little lost. However, I'm interested in making my own way in my career - for now - but I do have a question based on many years of "other" mmo gaming.
Simply, is there any point (other than warping for warping's sake) to warping around at random, sightseeing? Is there anything to see? So far everything has been much the same. After all, it is space and it is a fairly empty place.
It's not, I assume, like running the length of Azer*th (!) whereby you'll be greeted by a myriad of landscapes and landmarks?
Or am I wrong?
thanks! -- Twirling round like a rabid dog in a squash court |

There's an NPC titan in Luminaire (Or is it the wreckage? I dunno). Some 0.0 system has the floating wreck of the first Titan ever destroyed. Another system has the New Eden jump gate (where everyone came from). Chribba has a dreadnaught mining veldspar in Amarr
You can see some interesting stuff in wormholes (pulsars, what look to be black holes, etc)

There is almost no point to warping around randomly. The only caveat to this is to go "ratting" where you zoom between asteroid belts looking for NPC pirate ships to blast. In 0.0 security space this can be quite lucrative.
Other than that though "exploring" is more formalized. That is you need to fit probes to scan a system and find special plexes and wormholes and such that have other goodies. There is no way to find these without doing the scan/probe so as such is not exactly "random" (although mostly what is where is random and changes often...some things are static though).

There are a number of sight-seeing locations around New Eden. These range from the very safe and easy to visit remains of a battle (I believe there's one in Sarum Prime) to the NPC titan (It's a Leviathan) orbiting Caldari Prime in the Luminaire system to the more difficult such as the Eve Gate in the New Eden system. Some, such as Steve (a floating Titan wreck from one of the first titans killed) are in 0.0 space and are fairly difficult for the average empire dweller to get to.
Each major patch seems to introduce more and more of these sites although the largest bunch were added following the Empyrean Age release last summer and are mostly battle/faction warfare related sites.
Usually they show up in space as a beacon on the overview.
You won't make any money doing sightseeing but it's usually free and provides an interesting diversion. "Boo hoo. Cry some more." CCP Whisper

theres a 2001: a space odessy obelisk in space, theres the eve gate, theres the wreckage of the eldar fleet in kor azor prime, the monument in amarr, the wreckage of the first destroyed titan, theres also a massive gatecamp and a hostile fleet somewhere in delve.
if you go probing you can find lots of mini dungeons to do and get some great loot out of, you can also go through a wormhole and find yourself horribly lost in unexplored space. id say that was worthwhile. We come for our people |

As well as that, learn scanning and probing, see what you can find for yourself. Sure it'll maybe just be artifact sites, hacking sites, wormholes etc., but it gives you a certain satisfaction to hunt these things down for yourself.

If you're interested in exploration for the sake of seeing the sights, the best thing you could possibly do is start reading the prime fiction. Many, Many of the Chronicles mention specific locations for which content exists in EVE. Also, you'll have a greater understanding of why the stuff is there in the first place.

I don't go sightseeing, but I do go exploring (asteroid belt hunting, or just probing stuff out because I like doing that).
If you are having fun doing anything, then you win the game. Enjoy!

There are relatively few landmarks in EvE. The most important of them is the EvE gate, but a few others too.
However, EvE does have place for exploration. There are a number of hidden complexes and sites and since the latest patch entire hidden systems that you can discover if you choose the path of the explorer.
It's probably the most fun non-combat profession, and it's not very hard to get into, although some of the sites you find you won't be able to exploit without skills in other areas.
