The new patch via EVE patches here (on the left side) works. Logged in post patch and am seeing no issues.

and wine tells me something about BITS not implemented and the installer fails with Error Code 2.

When I tried to let the client download and install the patch automatically it gave Error 2. Just downloaded it manually from the EVE site and it now works.
Thanks Sev, I really appreciate everything you do to inform the other Linux users here.

yer welcome. 
I don't even bother with BITS. When the client asks if I wish to upgrade, I say no, close the thing, and grab the _m patch. Kinda' like pavlov's dog now. heh heh.

I think that, for WINE/Linux users, you have to install the patch three times because there is an algorithm which asks itself "Is this another rebellious Linux user? Y/N If Y, error 2. Has the user tried 3 times? Y/N If Y, he is serious and we need the money. Install patch"

Just for other thick-heads like me... that's three times in a row. Do not try to start EVE in between patch run failures, do not kill wineserver and all the .exe files in between, do not run other diagnostic commands.
Just run the patch directly with wine three times. Suddenly, it works.
