New guy here. I have read the descriptions of the races, but I have had trouble finding a nice summary document.
1. I created an Amarr character. Will I be able to gang up with my friends later if they are a different race?
2. How big of an impact does race make on how you play? Will training overcome any racial bonuses? Is there a summary of the racial bonuses somewhere?
Thanks, Inurmail

There is no game mechanic that imposes significant restrictions. At most, the CEO of your corp will need to train Ethnic Relations: that's it and it is totally insignificant. All racial bonuses come from the ships/skills, not from the characters: so, yes, training will allow you over come any racial bonuses.
The only remaining impact that race has is on roleplaying. Since you make up whatever rules you want in that area, you are free to choose how much impact it has on your game player. For me that is none whatsoever.

you should read some of the character creation guides as far as attributes themselves go (though i hear they changed that now and you get to assign attributes at a later time)
the picture of your avatar and the attributes you get are the only thing that you get with your race. well also different races use different ships and weapons but there is nothing stopping you to simply train the skills for other races.
you can play with your friends. your race does not matter there. if you have played other mmos with races and classes and lvls you need to forget about all that. in eve all you get with your race are some starter skills. but as you can train any skill you want it doesn't really matter.
now if you want to use lasers, of course, pick amarr. if you wanna use missiles, pick caldari (hint: pick amarr )
but if you pick gallente, there is nothing stopping you from training the lasers or missile skills and using them.
later on, when you have some isk, you can join Factional warfare if you wish. there you get to join one of these 4 factions. once you join them you will be at war with the opposite faction. again, you can join any faction you want. if you are caldari, you can play for the gallente with no problems (well after a while caldari wont like but some social skills can take care of that )
so you and your friend can join any faction and then play against others, or join opposite factions and be at war.
as far as the impact goes, i dont know, i guess if you would role play then it does have an impact, other then that no.
also, there is no such thing as a racial bonus. the only things you get are attributes (which effect how fast you train different skills. industrialists dont want the same attributes as pvpers) and some starter skills. note however that they changed the system from the last time i created a character and i think you get to assign your atributes at a later time, when you understand what they mean :)
if you have any other questions, do ask

some RP corps and alliances will take interest in your race, some like PIE will only accept amarrians. beyond that... no it doesnt matter. We come for our people |

first post here, but I had the same questions yesterday.
I don't think race does matter anymore attribute wise. the character creation page on the wiki i.e. http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Character_Creation does not reflect the changes described here. http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=618
Quote: We have removed the School, Career and Specialization completely. These added quite a bit of complexity. Players were required to select these without knowing what to expect. Many times, people would choose blindly, leading them to feel let down or disappointed later on.
We have moved the allocation of the 5 free attribute points. A new player has no idea what the attributes means and, as many of you probably have done, assigned 3 to charisma because it must be awesome!
have fun :)

Your race has virtually no impact on the game beyond your portrait (you will never be able to change your race and gender after character creation) and starting skills/faction/location.
Any race can train for the ships/equipment of any other race. You can gain and lose faction with anything, no matter what your current standings are. As a Caldari, my standings are actually better with the Gallente Federation than the Caldari state right now.
Race is mostly only relevant to roleplayers. There are some player corps that will only accept certain races, for example. For the most part, most Eve players ignore race though.
