My question is what else I need to train in order to be anygood with hybrid turrets? I have
Controlled Bursts / Rank 2 / SP: 90510 of 512000 level 4
Gunnery / Rank 1 / SP: 45279 of 256000 level 4
Medium Hybrid Turret / Rank 3 / SP: 135765 of 768000 level 4
Motion Prediction / Rank 2 / SP: 90510 of 512000 level 4
Rapid Firing / Rank 2 / SP: 16038 of 90510 level 3
Sharpshooter / Rank 2 / SP: 90510 of 512000 level 4
Small Hybrid Turret / Rank 1 / SP: 8009 of 45255 level 3
Surgical Strike / Rank 4 / SP: 181020 of 1024000 level 4
Weapon Upgrades / Rank 2 / SP: 512000 of 512000 level 5
what else do I need to train in order for my hybrids to be worth a crap? I just keep on getting hits of like 35 max per hit. My missile dps is way better.

I would say T2 guns, but all support skills at 4 is a good start (and paying attention to the distance from the target and the angular velocity it has). And use antimatter

Edited by: Solius on 17/03/2009 16:43:47 I am doing level 3's in a ferox loaded with medium hybrid turrets and long range ammunition. I have some limited knowledge about transversals and that sort of thing but im not sure if im usin that knowledge effectivley. I still have one or two support skills that I need to train but I'm not sure that it is gonna make a huge diffrence.

Hybrid turrets don't have particularly high volley damage, but they do have a relatively high rate of fire.
As others have noted, train towards T2. The railgun specialization skill will give you 2% more damage per level when using T2 guns, even when using T1 ammo.
Rapid firing will not improve your volley damage, but it will improve your damage per second by improving your rate of fire.
I recommend Trajectory Analysis IV to improve your falloff range.
Finally, the Ferox gets a range bonus, not a damage bonus. This should allow you to use shorter range ammo (like anti-matter) which does far more damage than any long range ammo. If you are intent on using range as a defense and trying to snipe targets, long range ammo will definitely decrease your overall turret damage.

I should use antimatter charges? Trajectory Analyis and Advanced weapon upgrades to IV are next on my list after i get through with my secondary learning skills. I should be ok once I get T2 hybrids though?

Yup, Antimatter is the shortest range/Highest Damage ammo, it's opposite is Iron, which is long range and low damage. The other rail ammo falls somewhere in between. Faction ammo increases damage, but really isn't cost effective for NPCing. T2 guns also give you the option of using Spike, which is a much longer range ammo that hits a little harder than Iron, but again it costs a little more than it's worth for NPCing.
Make sure that you are fitting T2 Magnetic Field Stabilizers, at least one, but no more than 3 due to stacking penalties. Each one will substantially increase your damage at the cost of a slot and some CPU.
Another option for higher damage is to switch from Railguns to Blasters. They use the same Hybrid Turret skill, get really good damage, but you have to practically scratch hulls with your target. Again, not really optimal for NPCing.
Training Surgical Strike to V will increase per-shot impact damage, but will take quite awhile for the small increase you get. Rapid Firing V will increase your DPS, but not your per-shot impact damage. Also if you go for Rapid Firing V, Controlled Bursts V is recommended to mitigate the increased cap use of the guns.
Keep in mind with guns you are never going to see the OMGWTFBBQ alpha volley damage that you get with a missile impact. What you'll get instead are lots of small hits that add up over time. (1 500 dmg hit every 10 seconds for a missile, vs 10 60 dmg hits in the same time from your guns. )
NPCing note: Depending on the rats you are shooting, they might be tanking your weapons. Hybrid guns deal a combination of Kinetic/Thermal damage and you can't switch your damage type like you can with Missiles.
Last note: The Ferox isn't the ship of choice for rail DPS, nor is it's big brother the Rokh (as much as I adore that ship for fleet work...). If you want to stick with rails, consider cross-training Gallente and fly a Brutix before upgrading to a Megathron or Hyperion.

Something you also need to be clear on here.
There are two types of damage dps=damage per sec and volley damage.
Both have thier place but both are not equal. When fighting alot of lesser ships then volley damage can actually exceed dps in over all kill time. DPS is what you get over time. Missles are a volley damage weapon hybrid turrents are a dps weapon.
If your running missions then volley damage is usally better then dps. As the more ships you take out and the faster you take them out the less tank you need and the faster you finish the mission. Which is why ships like the raven that use missiles are considered the most efficent mission running ships.
Now volley damage tends to break down a bit when moved over to PVP because of the resists most people stack. Which is not to say that missles are useless or not good for PVP. Just with dps you have a better chance of over coming the player built tanks plus there is no wait time for your guns in PVP where you missle could be fired but the target is dead well before they ever get there.
So it may seem like your missles do alot more damage then your guns but it just might seem that way because of the diffrence between dps and volley.
Just as a little side line to this I use to run a ferox with Projectiles because the volley damage on them was better. I ran level 4's with that setup. This allowed me to use my gunnery skills but use a more efficent weapon system for mission running. Plus I had a better tank then with they hybrids. This was before I got my skills up even more.

I have already made some plans to cross train gallante ships for the future so I am glad I made a right choice there. I think that from what I am seeing on this thread that I should train some of my gunnery skills to 5 and get to T2 turrets seems sound. What about drones? Are they worth training for the time being to help with damage dealing? I have drones 5 and am training drone interfacing to 4. I also want to be able to use T2 drones. Would this be a waste of time or worht it?
