Physics was never my strongest area, but I have a physics question that's been bugging me and I figure someone on these boards knows the answer:
Since outer space is essentially 'nothing,' if I have a heated object in space, is it possible for it to cool when it isn't in contact with less excited matter (ignoring space particles and the like). Can and how does entropy function?

Space, contrary to popular belief is not filled with 'nothing'. You can normally find high quantities of hydrogen and some of the other lighter atoms randomly floading around. Space is also believed to be randomly populated with "Dark Matter" as well as the possiblility of "Anti Matter".

Last I checked, there are 3 forms of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. I believe radiation exists no matter what (barring absolute zero), i believe this phenomena is called black body radiation.
there is probably no convection in the traditional sense, as a density cycle is based off gravity, so without much thinking I'd say its non existant.
Finally, conduction is the transfer of head via direct contact (think a heat sink). This probably occurs during impact with space particles that you said to ignore, so i guess the only heat loss will be from radiation =)
I'm an engineering student, so I tend not to remember the theory/ideal models pure science people tend to make (i can crunch number like the best of them though =P)

yes, it would radiate off the heat

If this world was supposed to be friendly CCP wouldnt have wasted time paying the devs to code so many weapons |

Edited by: Sergeant Bilko on 18/08/2004 03:09:13 radiators are used to cool stuff in space..the ones on cars are named incorrectly and should be called convectors...cooling efficiency depends on material and shape.

Ironically keeping cool is a big problem in space stations of today since radiation is not very effective at getting rid of heat. _________________________________________________________

Here's another one then since my thrusters are on all the time why doesn't my ship get faster and faster and faster? When i turn them off what force stops my ship? -----------

To end problems before they start. This isnt the normal universe this is eve =P
After all your ship can get on fire in this game and leave a fire trail. Seeing as fire eats oxygen I don't see that happening anywhere but eve ;) ---

as the thrusters increase your velocity, your ships mass increases to prevent it from reaching the speed of light. but as thats 300,000km/s that isnt the problem.
F=Ma, force= mass x acceleration
tells us that the decreasing acceleration must be because the force/mass is decreasing. ie the mass must increase (as the componant has a constant force of say 100MN-unless theres other problems, see below) this suggests that the maximum speed in the eve=verse is much ower than the speed of light.
you shouldnt slow down in space unless you are traveling trough a dense gas cloud or are being 'pulled' by the gravitational field of a large object like a star, these numbers would never be high enough to slow a ship down, unless you were practically on the surface of the sun!
having said that this is a game!
the amount of heat ur radiating determines the colour of the light you give off, thats the whole black-body thing.
entropy is the movement to disorder of any system, and is why no real system can ever be reversible, unless theres someone there to put in lots of energy. entropy is a pretty hard and fast law of the universe so it happens all over. to be honest i dont know if it makes any interetsig difference to this situation.
"physics is fun" according to the institute of physics, but then they would say that!
AlexC
(btw, there are anywhere between 1 and 100 particles in every m3 of what we think of as space, so thats quite full really. and you dont wanna have anti-matter anywhere near the regualr stuff caus it causes all sorts of explosions)
