There is no obvious user interface to tell my drone to repair my armor. I assume that the purpose of an armor maintenance drone is to repair my armor, is this correct?

drones only repair other ships, not your own. You have to target the ship to repair it, and you can't target yourself.

launch drones, target someone, have them selected ,right click drones in drone pannel and send them off to repair target.

Wait, never tried this, but can't you assign drones to your friend and then have them target you and repair you?

if you are soloing repair drones can't repair your own ship however, for mission running and things if your drone bay is large enough for several waves (arbitrator/vexor since you are new) a couple repair drones can rep your other drones or you can fit a remote rep to your ship to repair drones making mission running very cheap.
if you have a friend that runs higher end missions your repair drones may make it a lot easier for them to tank allowing you to get money, standing and LP that would take much longer in a smaller ship flown by a newer pilot which is tbh probably the better use for your rep drones.

Will not work. Logistics drones cannot be assigned.
