I have 2 miner's that I'm currently training to help cover the costs of my plex cards and PvP habit on my main.
I have the mining down and making ISK, but I want to maximize the ISK per hour for them. I was thinking maybe I should start building ships or fittings on the side.
I really have no clue on the industry side of things, but when I look at the costs of BPO's, combined with research time and materials I just don't see much profit in building T1 ships.
Am I missing something here? Would I be better off to just buy my ships and maybe produce my own ammo or T2 guns and equipment?

Well I wasn't so much thinking on the mining side of things.. I only mine with them enough to pay the bills. I was looking at researching and BPO stuff simply to take advantage of having the extra alt's with free time on their hands.
I figure I could have them doing something while I'm not using them.

Edited by: zigboyd on 22/03/2009 14:54:52 Well im in the same situation you are. I have 2 accounts, 1 hulk 1 hauler. I was thinking of taking the hauler character and training him for freighter. That way I can sell the ore/minerals for the highest price because Ill be able to transport it and the second is that i can buy minerals/ore low and sell high as well. Right now an iteron V isnt really worth doing this with because of such small profit margins from having such a low cargo space compared to a freighter.
Only downside is the price of the freighter and the training that will have to be put into it.

If you have access to a pos then yea research is easy isk. I do alot of frig bpos and it works out to 12-15 million per month per slot and I don't have lev5 skills, implants or all that. Ammo bpos are a little better than that. However if you're looking to make hundreds of millions then you can't get that researching. Thats also more than you can probably get with t1 manufacturing. If you want to pull down hundreds of millions a month you can trade or do Invention/TechII manufacturing. There are more specialized ways, but those are two of the more popular ways. And you're right, you can't make much building frigs.

Manufacturing t1 ships is hardly profitable given the time and effort involved.
Put one toon in Jita, one in a trade hub, and shuttle back and forth trading yer butt off. It's a bit tedious, but after awhile you'll have enough Isk to be able to kick back and do whatever you want.
For convenience I manufacture all my ammo, and only use faction ammo when I'm in a real tough mission (Level IV EA5 or Level III New Frontiers5). Manufacturing standard ammo for resale is another area where you spend a lot of time and effort without significant payout.

For manufacturing have a look at www.eveindustry.co.cc. It has every T1/T2 BPO so you can work out your profit from mineral costs. Takes into account your skills, simply put, does all the maths for you.
Hope if helps if you decide to go down that route.

Read that complete miner's guide, found in this forum...it covers more advanced mining as well as production of T1 atm.

Manufacturing and selling T1 rigs are very profitable, based on not having to spend a lot of time doing it, which makes it a good job for an alt. It is true many of the 76 or so rigs seem to cost more to build than they sell for in any given region. So, do not build these.
Read the eve guide to rig manufacturing, which is listed in the player guides section of eveonline. (It actually lists a few of the "better" rigs to manufacture & sell.)
Start small. Best to start with inexpensive rigs that do not take a lot of capital. This limits you to an initial choice of about six or so rigs. Start with the ones that do not have any negative side affects. Just build two or three rigs. The money is in the PvP part of the game, of finding a market for the raw materials, and for the rigs.
I have more than financed my main character's various ship-losing escapades with a small rig manufacturing business on the side.

R&D is what your looking for to make money while your not doing anything. Requires science 5 and one other skill to get datacores. Then sell the datacores on the market. That should give you some decent money comming in with little real effort.
