It would be a more hands on and skill related ship combat experience.
Even to this day piloting a ship can feel little more then being in a large rts game where you only get to control a single unit. A very complex world, yet rules that can be as rudimentary as a chess game.
It's probably a common problem, as the escapist describes, the typical mmo fight involves two people kicking each others shins repeatedly, the eventual winner being the one wearing the biggest boots.
Common among most mmo's maybe, but doesn't Eve deserve better?
Of course it's not quite as simple as shin kicking but right now everything still seems far, far too revolved around the system of mobility. Staying in range of one ship, staying out of range of another, speed of one ship, tracking of another, explosion velocity of another, signature, range effect on all modules.
All accuracy manipulating variables, yet we don't do any of the aiming, it's part formula and part roll of a die. All we do is move the ship around a bit.
Therefore it can be more fun flying small craft but if you're in a brick like a battleship, there can be slim pickings in terms of variating your chances of success in a battle.
Is it any wonder why nanoes and mwd's were so popular? (Ok some were imba) The one true mechanic in the game players could really manipulate to try and gain advantage, not least that due to high speeds they required a bit of skill, thus making them more fun to fly.
I know there are certain limitations that we have to accept, such as keeping certain things toned down in the interest of server performance and client performance but;
Even an old 2D mmo I used to play called Navyfield, 100 odd ships to a fight, yet we had full turret control and had to try and calculate the correct firing arc to hit our targets, or course such things aren't so easily doable in a 3D environment but there are lots of other options that could be taken advantage of to require some sort of thought and input from players;
Armor sections/Shield Sections, banking a ship to protect a weaker side. (Any other mechwarrior fans here? )
Subsystems for certain ship functions. (Homeworld 2 comes to mind)
Some form of power guage you click to stop at the right moment or on screen is another technique used by some multiplayer games that can be used to calculate the chance success of certain things. (Possibly macroable but was worth a mention)

Ideas you mentioned have been mentioned before. But it seems to be pretty hard to realise most of the features hardware wise. It requires ALOT more from the hardware..
You are totally right though imo.. And maybe there should be better hardware/network connections to realise features like that.

The problem I see with manually aiming is that you don't have time for it as EVE is fast pvp currently the main strategic component is that you need to watch your range, speed, capacitor level, damage, module activation times, local for reinforcements, drones, damage done to the opponent and trying to predict what the other guy will do.
I think this pretty much sums up the course of actions you already have to do and manual targeting will be very hard to implement without making the whole system to complex to control.
The problem with subsystems is that it doesn't work in eve due to mechanics. It breaks the game if you put it in area of shield tanking and or armor tanking and there isn't much use for it anyway when the guy is in hull.
It's a nice idea but I'm afraid that it wont work.

I've always thought of Eve combat kind of like being the captain in Star Trek..."activate shield booster, fire all missiles"... It's more you giving the orders. That being said, I wouldn't mind if even more depth was added ("switch all power to front shields" type stuff). I don't think I'd really like the direct piloting, twitch type stuff I think op is talking about. I have that already in pretty much every other video game.

Yeah you could say EVE is more of an RTS with the warping to different areas and giving commands.

I'm not particularly talking about direct piloting much or even manual turret control, manual turret control in particular would murder the server afaik anyway which is why I was talking about certain limitations we have to accept and talking about alternate solutions to make pvp combat a bit deeper.
I am personally particular fond of any good shield sections and armor sections idea though unfortunately I don't think game would allow it as said.

I'm kind of hoping that eventually we'll see something like this with the mythical atmospheric flight. But the sheer technical limitations make it impractical for every day fighting in EvE. Manual Aiming + Lag = comedy... it would have to be done on effectively instanced servers with fairly low player limits.

Edited by: Lahha on 24/03/2009 17:43:30 Making it so that you can't shoot through asteroids and ships would add dramatic depth to pvp.
Skilled pilot could use asteroids as cover, or in a fleet, sturdier ships could be used to shield support vessels.
Of course lag will wreck the whole thing so nvm.

Yeah some things would be nice...but even if you really had full control of a BS it would still be so slow doing a barrel roll wouldnt matter also seeing as how turrets track or can track near 360 degrees whats the point? Would be nice if certain ships only had say forward mounted or side mounted guns to make things a bit more interesting.
Someone mentioned jump gate. However one of the really nice things and bad things about eve is the population is based on one server....Jumpgate as far as I know will not support that. But I'm still hoping jumpgate will succeed in the MMO business and have greater depth such as EVE.
