so, i read that although speed tanking is definitly a plausible method of tanking, its hard to achieve. however, i also read that the minmatar have been known to utilise it, so, my question is, can u only speed tank with a rifter, and use leftover slots for wep udgrades, and the like? and alternative question, can shield tanking be used for a rifter if your shield skills are high?

Couple ways to do it. I enjoy this fit because it seems quite stupid on EFT, but while solo, it really really works. No need for web as you'll be able to catch up to anything cept a scramming range boosted ceptor, unless they're a better afterburning frig and they have a scram. You'll also be able to run after that ratter more than 10km away before they escape with a mwd.
But feel free to replace it with a web and make yourself standard and boring.

you should try to ask this in teh SHIPS forum, but yes Speed rifter works well, also Passive Shield Tank rifter is a nice setup. Personally i've never used anything but those two, never tried to armour tank a rifter myself.

Dont use a damage control on a rifter. It's not like your buffer tank really matters. If anything, fit a SAR, otherwise caldari will kill you every time.

Drop the istab, its useless, fit a DC if you have the CPU. Otherwise, fit 3 nanofibers.
also, how do you plan to tackle with that?

Damage control, the same thing you were advised against taking earlier in the thread
Basically, it depends on what your targets are. If you and your frig buddies intend to be part of larger fleets, you'll fill a tackle role and will probably get popped quickly once someone targets you, regardless of the damage control. However, if you and your buddies intend to take part in the large numbers of frigate fights that FW presents (since gate guns won't shoot you, getting frig fights on gates happens a lot more often) then the damage control will help to outlast the enemy frig. ----

it takes 3 hours or so to train up a passive tanked rifter pilot.. shield relays in low ab-scam-medium shield extender 125mm/150mm ac in highs and you have a cheap fit with free clones to play with on a alt ;) this 812k sp pilot has killed assault frigs and even caused battleships to die from sentry after tackling them when they was a badboy some explo/therm and em ammo and off you go...orbit at 500 and pew pew

I remember. :)
DC = Damage control. I recommend it as the Rifter has a large structure and itll add 50% resists to that, as well as a bit of armour and shield resists.
As far as speed tanking goes, it's all about picking your target, against medium guns at above, if you're orbiting quickly at a short range to keep your angular velocity up, you may get away with an honour tank - if their drones don't get you. Against something with better tracking, you'll melt pretty quickly.
If you want to speed tank and fit an extender, I would do something like:
[T2 MSE MWD] Overdrive Injector System II Overdrive Injector System II Damage Control II 1MN MicroWarpdrive I Medium F-S9 Regolith Shield Induction J5 Prototype Warp Disruptor I 150mm Light AutoCannon II,EMP S 150mm Light AutoCannon II,EMP S 150mm Light AutoCannon II,EMP S [Offline Heatsink]

I don't really see how this is supposed to work. Once you get warp disrupted and your mwd shuts down - no more speed tanking. Use an afterburner.

I really don't get why you'd want to do this. By the time you've got your microwarp drive and shield extender your sig radius is enormous. Pretty much anything would be able to hit you at the 12km range you'd need to use and by flying that far out you've completely gimped your DPS. Why not just use an armour tank and the usual AB, web, and scram? That way you can dictate range and play to Barrage's advantages out at 7.5 km or so or hug larger hulls tight where they can't hit you.
If you were going to fly an arty fit, though, things might be different. I can't see why you'd want to, though. Rifters are for getting in people's face with. The speed and manoeuvrability just lets you dictate the terms of the fight. Speed tanking is not really a viable method any more. Even interceptors find it hard to do so a T1 frigate's going to have real issues. If you really want to speed tank look at ships like the Slasher, Atron, Condor, etc... or just get a Taranis.

I agree with the last two posters - the armour tanked rifter is much better.
The speed tanked Rifter is ok as a throwaway suicide tackler in a gang, but useless for 1v1 combat.

Edited by: Morel Nova on 27/03/2009 13:55:40 Edited by: Morel Nova on 27/03/2009 13:54:47 I'd defiantly say go armor tank. You win fights in rifters either by:
- fighting something bigger and sig-radius/speed tanking them. works with AB against missiles and guns cant track well enough. Medium shield extender will bump up your sig makign this less efficient.
- control range against small stuff because you are faster. kite closerange ships and kill them with barrage, get in close on longrange setups (arty-rifters!) with EMP . To do this you need both web, scram and AB. 99% of frig combat takes place within 10km where you will be both scrammed/webbed. (secret fact: web/scram/AB rifters can kill blaster taranises)
I have had success with highs: 3x 150mm/200mm + rocket launcher mid: web, scram, afterburner lows: SAR2, 200mm plate, gyro II
if you cant overheat use a damage control over the gyro, but heated this thing slaughters damage control setups. Put in space whales!

The wonderful thing about the rifter is that you can use quite a few different fits and be effective against different targets.
If your focus is on speed tanking, I guess I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned a TD. You can have a lot of luck against other frigs and AFs with a TD/AB/scram fit rifter. Again, like any fit, it won't work against everything but it will give you a good shot against many similar sized ships.
The key is to have a number of good fits in your repertoire and then use what seems best at the time. A TD fit can really make speed tanking very viable against many similar sized turret ships.

Well from what I've seen, if you have the skills a speed tanked rifter can be very deadly. I fought a guy the other night and he out right destroyed my armor tanked set up.
This was after I had just killed 3 other standard fit Rifters in 1 v 1's with out much problems. I was feeling confident then he came out and totally owned me.
After that fight I'd say Speed tanked has a place other than just a through away, but you really need your navigation, gunnery and rocket skills maxed out to make it work right.

well, last night i tryed out the speed tank against a punisher. got owned! my fitting was 3xAC 200m 1x rocket launcher 1 invulner 1 AB 1 web 3 overdrives thorn rocket, and phased plasma rounds then round two fitting: lost the ivulner for a small extender mk2 and replaced the ammo with fleet counterpart.
and got owned, slightly less, but owned none the least.
it seemed that when i got up close he minced,. but when i stayed out of his scram/gun range i could barely hit. major fail fit. i was thinking bout replacing my AC's for blasters? or arti's? either extreme long range or extreme short range?

#1 Speed tanking only works against larger targets - not frigate hulls. #2 Invul Fields are pointless on frigates. #3 Use an armour or shield tank.

The problem is there is no single superior way to fit a Rifter. You can fit it several ways, but each has its pro's and cons.
The question that should have been asked but surprisingly wasn't is: what will you be using it for? Based on that, you can decide how to fit and fly, and which engagements to enter and which to avoid. To make it even more complex, you should take into consideration the level of your relevant skills compared to those of your opponent.
Also a very important distinction is whether you'll fly solo or in a gang. If you are solo, your survival becomes more important, because you cannot win if you die. This means you'll need to think about survival as a priority. When you're in a group, you might die but still win the fight by having your gang kill a more valuable ship then the ship(s) that your ship was worth in the first place. You should focus perhaps a bit more on your role (like getting the first tackle in a sensor boosted but paper thin frig). Also, you might not get shot at at all when you're in a gang, while you'll always be 'primary' when you fight solo.
Then you need to think about your target: what kind of ship will you be fighting? A lot of people think they need to stick to their 'weight class': so frigs fight frigs, cruisers fight cruisers, but you could be wrong. Sometimes creating a mismatch will work in your advantage, but you really need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of different classes of ships. And not only the ship type is important, but also the specific ship and fitting. The good thing is that a lot of ships have very typical fittings, because their bonuses and slot layout will give that particular fit most benefit. Ships with a bonus to speed will almost always be speed fitted, ships with a bonus to optimal range will most often be fitted with longer range guns, etc. Understanding this will make you take advantage of their weaknesses.
When you say you want to speed tank, you need to understand how speed will help you tank. Speed itself doesn't take away damage, but it makes you harder to hit by bigger or longer range guns, because they cannot track you very well. Important to note is that this hardly works against small, short range guns, because these will track you pretty much no matter how fast you go. The added bonus of speed is that it decreases damage from missiles that do hit you, and it can help you avoid certain missiles that fly slower then you do. Both this works very well of frigate hulls, because they are fast by nature and are already hard to hit due to a small signature radius.
The most common mistake in speed tanking is MWD usage on a frigate: it will make your signature radius enormous, taking away the biggest advantages of a frig vs big guns / missiles. If you use a MWD, don't leave it on once you're in range, or use a AB instead. A second common mistake is by flying straight at your opponent: this will not help you avoid incoming gun fire, because the guns don't need to track you at all. Always fly at your opponent at an angle unless it's a 100% missile boat.
When thinking about getting in gun range, fit for the occasion. If you are fighting small ships, you will need short range guns (for a Rifter: auto cannons) because they track very well. When you fight bigger stuff, longer range gun (for a Rifter: artillery) will probably be better. When fitted for speed, loosing that speed because of a web or a scram (when MWDing) will increase your chances of getting killed. Against small short range guns, this really doesn't make a big difference, but against big/long guns, it does, so with cruiser and up, use longer range guns and stay out of web / scram range. Esp. with battle ships, you should also look out for smart bombs.
When fighting a frigate with a frigate, know what type of guns they fit and use it against them. For example, blasters have a very short range, so stay further away, while rails track bad, so stay close and speedy.
Good luck!
