I'm sure this has been said, but just train what you want to train. Forget FOTMs and what other people say. If you see something pretty, train for it.

Go ahead and train Amarr for the laser fotm. Just realise that its going to be quite a bit longer to get effective results than that 3 week old mission running raven alt or the neuting domi pilot with all level 4 skills.

Skill for Minmatar, it canŠt get worse(ok it can but it is highly unlikely). 
Btw I actualy skill Minmatar atm, till CCP decides that Blasterships should be usefull again.

But my alt is training Amarr !
I think they rock, lazors with scorch ammo do blaster like damage at > 3 Meters (roughly the range of blasters)
What's not to like ?

If new to pvp take most sp bs in game typhoon is cheep and you newer will be primary target for the other gang most of the time.

Both of these ships are actually very good for PVP, so long as it's short range brawl.
A HAMDrake is (in my experiance) one of the better gank battlecruisers. It has the highest buffer of them as lows can be used for Ballistic Controls, and still puts out 600+ DPS.
And a TorpRaven is certainly no slouch against other BS's, though it does suffer very servearly against anything smaller.
Just don't try to use missiles for range on anything other than capitals and POS's

- Recons: Curse is crazy powerful in certain situations. One of the better recons.

Just a few corrections....
- t1 cruisers, duramaller kicks ass tank wise, pity you have to use minny guns on it, arbitrator is a really nice mini curse as well for low skill or low wallet pilots, eventhe omen isn't too bad does a nice ammount of damage and is dirt cheap.
- Hacs, the sac has one of the best tanks in the game and ham's are really good if you can dictate the range properly.
- Battlecruisers, harby is a really nice ship does loads of damage, reasonable tank, drones. prophecy not too bad, hard to fit but enormous tank and ok damage.
- Battleships, abaddon is very good, large ammounts of damage with an absolutly ridiculus tank very nice cap too.
Other than that fairly accurate.
Not supprised that a minny wouldn't rate any of the amarr ships that excel at tanking though, I've heard rust and duct tape doesn't stand up very well under fire.

No, the nerfs on cruise missiles are set too RESTRICTIVE, that you can overcome them with rigs/implants and skills trained.
Torp ravens are only usefull in some specific scenario's and are mostly dead weight.
Sorry, but i got the skills high and my amarr alt is doing the fleetwarfare nowadays.
PS: that same amarr alt is also quite faster with killing the small stuff in missions, in fact with changing his setup, he is basically faster then the raven nowadays, even when he has less skills.

I fly Caldari, and now am training Galente ships, why would I advise anyone to train somehting else then what they like to fly?
The best ships for PvP at present are Ammar, they used to be Caldari, Galente and for a short while even Minmatar. Who cares though at some point the nerf bat will strike and strike hard then everyone will fly well what ever other race again.
I suggest one flies the shps that appeal to them most, appearantly at present most people find the golden pleasure rods the most appealing... so what?
