I've been looking into getting a Drake for pvp (small gang, will have tacklers) but having some trouble with the fit.
First question; are heavy missiles viable? The power grid they free up compared to HAMS let me cram another LSE II on there. Actually, I'll shut up and just paste what I came up with.
[Drake, PVP HAMs] Ballistic Control System II Ballistic Control System II Power Diagnostic System II Damage Control II
10MN MicroWarpdrive I J5 Prototype Warp Disruptor I 'Langour' Drive Disruptor I Invulnerability Field II Invulnerability Field II Large Shield Extender II
Heavy Assault Missile Launcher II, Terror Rage Assault Missile Heavy Assault Missile Launcher II, Terror Rage Assault Missile Heavy Assault Missile Launcher II, Terror Rage Assault Missile Heavy Assault Missile Launcher II, Terror Rage Assault Missile Heavy Assault Missile Launcher II, Terror Rage Assault Missile Heavy Assault Missile Launcher II, Terror Rage Assault Missile Heavy Assault Missile Launcher II, Terror Rage Assault Missile [empty high slot]
Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer I Anti-Kinetic Screen Reinforcer I
Hobgoblin II x5
Easy to fit, tank looks alright on paper at least, but dps is lower than HAMs. Having said that, the extra range is nice, and are precision heavies much good after QR?

Better damage, lower range, less tank. I thought about core defence field extenders but they add a very uncomfortable amount to the cost that I don't think I could really lose on a regular basis. If possible I'd prefer to use the heavy missile variant, but HAMs seem the most common and I'm just not sure of the HMs would work.
Opinions?

The nice thing about HMLs against HAMs is that HMLs benefit from advanced missile skills like GMP and TNP, which allows you to hit smaller targets better. HAMs are nice against large ships, but limited in utility against other stuff. You may be able to get away with an AB instead of a MWD on the HML Drake since you don't need to get in close. Maybe a Nos in the empty high slot if you can fit it, or maybe a cloaker II, but otherwise both are decent PvP loadouts.

Edited by: Adaera on 26/03/2009 00:26:28 Go with the HML. As the above poster put it well; HMLs do less damage on paper but in practice can attack a lot more targets reliably, not just BCs and up. ___________________

HAM setup looks rather similar to what i've got on mine.
Compares with other 'plated' BCs in terms of damage and EHP and makes a nice surprise for FCs who ignore the Drake.
Also, TP on the HAM Drake will be just as useful (if not more so) than on the HML Drake.

I'd not thought about GMP, good point there. Oh and about the TP - I wasn't thinking too much when I made these >_< but yeah as someone else has a web the TP is probably better on that. Still, kinda leaning towards the HML setup. Precision heavies (assuming they don't still suck?) open up some other possibilities and they're better in general vs smaller stuff. Hmm.

My current setup looks something like:
Ballistic Control System II Ballistic Control System II Ballistic Control System II Overdrive II
10MN MicroWarpdrive II (Or was it I? Am doing this from memory) Warp Disruptor II Webifier II Invul II Large Extender II Sensor Booster II (This slot can also hold a tracking disruptor, if you wanna downgrade some other mods, or another invul field)
Heavy Missile Launcher II Heavy Missile Launcher II Heavy Missile Launcher II Heavy Missile Launcher II Heavy Missile Launcher II Heavy Missile Launcher II Heavy Missile Launcher II Offlined Mod, possibly salvager
Choice of rigs, resists for cheapness, shield extenders for effectiveness
5x hobos IIs
If you wanna feel creative:
Ballistic Control System II Ballistic Control System II Ballistic Control System II Co-Processor II
10MN MicroWarpdrive II Invul II Invul II Warp Disruptor II (Max skills, mindlink, 32.1km, 38.5km range overloaded) Warp Scrambler II (Max skills, mindlink, 12km, 14.4km range overloaded) Webifier II (Max skills, mindlink, 13.4km, 17.4km range overloaded) (The 1/1/1 layout can be changed, if cpu allows, to whatever flavor of tackle you want)
Heavy Missile Launcher II Heavy Missile Launcher II Heavy Missile Launcher II Heavy Missile Launcher II Heavy Missile Launcher II Heavy Missile Launcher II Heavy Missile Launcher II Skirmish Warfare Link - Interdiction Maneuvers
A little more thin, tank wise, but fun ranges on the tackle and obviously helps the gang out

The HML drake has a very different style of play to it. Both of your fittings are pretty decent. I would like to advise trying to fit a second Invulnerability Field on the HML drake. I know the CPU will be tight, but that target painter isn't needed as badly as long as your support skills are decent.

Well speaking of the tank, how much ehp is "enough" on a ship like this? Getting about 66k on EFT, with 61/69/77/73 em/thermal/kinetic/explosive resists

That's more than enough, really
It's also worth noting that you wanna aim for faction ammo for damage, not "fury" "rage" missiles.
The only t2 ammo worth using out of the HAM and HML are the HAM's Javelins; if you ever find yourself in a situation where you can't get close enough to use normal hams missiles.

I've read many threads since I got ganked last night doing a mission in .4 space. My Drake was configured for PVE so I didn't have any scrams or web. A 4 ship gang warp to 0 at my location and before my noticed my overview blinking I was jammed, scram and web. Needless to say I had to sit there for 4 painful minutes while they pounded away with projectiles, drones etc.
I've decided that I will fly configured for PVP at all times. So my point is I can config a HAM or HML Drake and have mega shields but if I can't target anything was the point. None of the threads I've found touch on carrying smartbombs to combat drones or ECM/ECCM to counteract jamming. I'm I missing somethig here?
Questions: 1) If you are in deadspace mission and a gang warps to 0 and you have scram or disruptor active will that slow them when they reach scram/disruptor range? I'm not sure if these are AOE or not. If they are not AOE then I know the answer. 2) Do you need a target lock before ECM drones can engage? 3) Sensor Damps, Backup sensor array or ECM Burst? If I can get them webbed don't think I need target painter. Thoughts? 4)
This is what I'm thinking about doing:
[Drake, PVP] 3x BCU II 1x SPR II
1X Warp Disruptor II 1x X5 Prototype 1 Engine Enervator 1x 1x ???? Remote Sensor Dampenor, Sensor Backup Array or ECM Burst 1x Magnetic Scattering AMP II 2x Large Shield Extenders II
7x XR-3200 Heavy Missle Bay (Caldari Navy Scourge Heavy Missles) 1x Small Graviton Smartbomb II
Drones - Recommendations please
No Rigs at the moment can't spare the isk for them

Right off the bat I'm thinking don't mission in losec space unprotected or unprepared to break off your missions when hostiles come into the system. There are plenty of hisec mission agents you can run without risking your ship every time.
My second thought is that if you insist on running missions in losec without protection, a PvP ship may be a decent choice, but the reality is that your mission performance will suffer (i.e. you'll need much higher skills to complete missions than with your PvE setup), and there's no guarantee you can get away from a gang of pirates intent on killing you no matter how many warp stabs you fit on your ship. Your best bet is to just warp back to a station as soon as you see hostiles come in, and either wait them out or jump in your PvP ship and try to engage them.
As for the other stuff, smartbombs are limited in range and pirates can easily avoid them, and ECM drones are pretty weak especially against experienced pirates flying PvP ships.

This is a really good thread on PvP fittings for Drakes.
There is also one or two more per page of the last 25 pages of threads in the Ships and Modules forum and about as many in the Warfare & Tactics forum if you care too have a look.
There would be a lot less threads on Drakes if the search function weren't a pile of goo.

Whenever you are traveling or missioning in any med-low sec area, it's always a good idea to carry 1500-2000 FoF missiles. They will only do about 60% of the damage of regular missiles, but they are auto targeting, meaning they can not be jammed/disabled These should be used whenever you find yourself getting jammed, which is more than most other other weapon systems can do. Also, Hobgoblin II's are widely regarded as the best light drones you can carry. YMMV

Some good advice in this thread, and some really, really bad advice.
1. HAMs benefit from TNP.
2. ALWAYS fit a web on a HAM Drake. If you don't believe that you need it to keep your target tackled, then see what the missile damage formula says about webbing your target.
3. Both HMs and HAMs are viable, but the practical difference is really one of range, fittings and damage vs. frigates. HAMs deal full damage to almost all webbed cruisers.
4. Don't fit a painter to a HAM Drake. Fit a web instead.
5. Only fit a painter to a HM Drake if you're not intending to get within web range of your targets (because then you should fit a web), or if you're providing specific painter support to your gang (and then you shouldn't get within web range yourself).
5. Faction ammo is almost as good as Precision. It's almost never worth a reload.
6. With FOFs skill at V (lol), FOFs do the same damage as T1 missiles. |
