Simply put, people take it seriously, because the stakes are so high. EVE is a harsh universe, and when people lose years worth of effort in-game, you can expect them to be more than a little annoyed. People have been murdered over events in MMOs because of personal feelings of betrayal and loss. It's extremely rare, but it does happen.
Personally, I can sit back and laugh when I lose something. It happens. But then, I've never been scammed for something worth the majority of my fortune, as I play my cards close to my chest and do not trust other players with my ISK.
You have to remember that many different types of people play this game, and some people take things very personally, and could quite easily explode. Many just quit and never return, but you will always have one person who plots some kind of revenge.
The anonymity that this game offers allows people to indulge in behaviour they would never indulge in if their victim was sat right next to them. The moment you introduce a second player into a competetive environment (which is what EVE is), you're never 'just playing a game'.
If the population of EVE was in the same room, fights would be commonplace. This is not to say I endorse it, but it is the nature of humanity.
Yay! THIS! If this was a simple spaceship shooter, this drama wouldn't exist (but then.. well most of it.. ). MMO's are timesink, seem by many as investment where I (I am included in 'many) use my time to buff up my leisure and I don't take nicely to be scammed for 2bil (example, never happened to me either). I wouldn't go and put cash on a head for something happening in-game, but certainly don't ask me to befreind IRL someone doing these things.
Anyhow, for the topic at hand, MMO's which do not limit and enforce access to a single account per person are somehow widely open to metagaming. And even then, can't monitor people's phone eh? I hate metagaming, btw, like min-maxing builds etc, that's a complete different way of thinking when RPG is present with MMO, which is not the case for EVE.
