Guess you didnt take into account the fact that people building missiles (most of them) have maxed skills in manufacturing that allows them to use perfect quantity of minerals thus you're better off buying them from the market than wasting minerals (and isk).

A few things to be aware of ...
Often, you could actually sell the minerals you use to make the missile yourself and buy MORE of them with the ISK than you could have made with the same minerals. That's because some of the people selling missiles (for example) have fully researched their blue prints and have a good standing with the bases they operate out of and sell from, as well as having their skill sets in the appropriate areas fully developed and can thus sell you missiles cheaper than you can make them yourself.
Now ... I make all my own missiles too ... but then that's how I learned about all those things that people go through to shave a few ISK here and a few ISK there off their costs.
Now don't think I'm trying to discourage you from making your own missiles. If you want to be an Industrialist you have to start somewhere and making your own stuff is a good place to start. For one thing, if you are mining anyway and have all these minerals laying about - and you happen to want some missiles and have better things to do than jump x number of times to a system where they are on sale cheaper than you can make them - then you don't need to do that.
Plus, there's the simple satisfaction of making and using something yourself.
Just be aware of all the rest of it.
Of course, one of the other variables, is all the people making things - who are unaware of the value of the minerals they are using to do it - and thus selling items for below what they could have sold the minerals for that they made the items out of.
So - if you want to learn about being and industrialist and get some satisfaction out of the independence making your own stuff gives you - then have at it. But - if you're just out to make money - you're often better off just mining and refining - then selling your minerals. In fact, many very new players without any refining skills - are better off just selling their unrefined ore. It's better if you can refine it yourself though as you can ship a lot more minerals than ore if you're hauling it to market.
