So, after my screw-up in W-space, I found myself trying to get back to my home base from deep in 0.0 space in Venal.
I crossed about 20 jumps through 0.0 without incident, I saw a couple of ships near a couple of stargates but was always on my way before they could do anything.
I knew that the final gate between 0.0 and low-sec could be dangerous, I expected that there could well be a camp there, watching for people coming in rather than out, but still potentially dangerous to me.
I wanted to scout it out with my directional scanner, but the gate was so far off in the middle of nowhere that I couldn't figure out how to do so - there was nothing I could warp to that was anywhere near close enough to the gate to scan it.
So I shrugged and warped to the gate. Needless to say I hit a bubble about 60km out and was killed within a couple of seconds.
Was there any possible way I could have gotten through there? Or indeed any possible way I could have gotten out of 0.0 space at all?
Or should I have just waited until the instant the servers came online after maintenance in the hope that I could get on before the defenders?

When in doubt, this.

When you want to scout a gate without any warpable celestial nearby and you don't have any BM for it there's a little trick, cap out your ship so you don't reach the destination in warp. If you are capstable or don't have mods that will cap you out, one way of doing it is by warping and cancelling warp until you run out of capacitor. |

Oh, awesome, I'll definitely keep that in mind, thanks!

and how about warping to the gate from different direction ( station, celestial, whatever ) so you won't get caught in the bubble ? ( it is not question, it is a fact, im just being ironic a bit )

if the gate is so far out that he cant scan it, theres likely not to be a celestial nearby to change his angle enough to escape a drag bubble trap set up by a good alliance. and it would do nothing if the bubble was actually on the gate.
you should have checked local to see how many people were in the system first and foremost, then tried to get a little closer by the aforementioned cap trick. if your scan shows a bubble, you really are best waiting until you are the only one in system, say just after downtime.
you could have got an alt in from the other side to check the gate out for you. We come for our people |

Yeah there was certainly nothing on the other side that I could warp to.
I could see that there were a few people in the system, but there'd been a few in every system I'd passed through on my way.

You could always take PVP courses from Agony, they teach you tricks to detecting/avoiding gate camps and the like.

You always have to keep in mind, that the spaceholders know about you and your course trough 0.0 once you were spotted a few times.
You probably had a straight route set and held onto it. You get reported and they will probably know where you will likely go, how fast you cross systems and what ship you're flying.
Since you arrived right on shedule, they could have anchored that bubble only minutes ago. Best way would be to log off and try immediately after downtime.
It takes time to organize a border camp, so you always get 5 - 15 minutes whatever alliance holds this space.

You're not being ironic, you're being rhetorical.

Edited by: MooKids on 28/03/2009 20:38:57 Looked at the kill mail, and I noticed something you forgot. Combat Scanner Probes. Having some of these would have enabled you to pick up any ships near the gate, and you wouldn't have to do an exhaustive search either.
And as someone mentioned before, you were being watched and reported on well before you reached M-OEE8.
At least you didn't lose anything expensive, unless you had some high quality implants. Better to make your mistakes with something small than something big. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

Offlining and onlining a mod will get your cap down quicker if it's already at more than 95%.

look for another wormhole... like one to a nice lowsec system one jump from empire
That's what i did last time.
and yeah... 0.0 space guys have intel channels. they know exactly where you are going. I know. i do this sort of intel a lot...
and use the probes. combat probes can warp ahead and see gate camps.

Edited by: Iria Ahrens on 29/03/2009 22:25:35 Another option, if you can't warp to a celestial nearby, warp to one that is not nearby. Use f-11 to check out the system map and try warping to a planet at a different angle, then warp to 100 from there instead.
Also, in 0.0 constellation borders as well as regional borders are more likely to be camped. So change your star map to show by jump type and you will see constellation borders.
A lot of map functionality that isn't very useful in hi-sec suddenly becomes interesting in null. --

Hey thanks so much everyone that replied, I've gotten a whole heap of useful tips out of this which I'll certainly make use of next time I'm out in the badlands!
p.s. MooKids I particularly appreciate your reply since it was your Alliance's territory I invaded! Oh and no I wasn't wearing any expensive implants, just some +1's from the tutorial missions.

Best option there is once you're in system and know that the gate to lowsec is likely camped, just safe up somewhere in system (preferably within scan range of the gate), and log for awhile. Come back at random intervals, and if the population's low enough for your taste, make a break for it.

It was nothing personal, but you are a young newbie in a newbie corp, therefore a spy, which means you must die . -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |
