Can anyone advise me on what ship I should be aiming for, to use for effective mining purposes while I train my skills, I am Gallante and have been playing for only a few days I currently have the Navitas, Iteron, and catalyst. Any help with what skills I need to focus on would be good aswell. Thanx in advance.

I would advice you to get a retriever for starters, it's pretty fast to get into and it can mine at a decent rate.
Skills are:
Mining IV Industry V Science IV Astrogeology III Mining Barge III
For Strip miners you need Mining IV but that come with the skill sets for the retriever..

For the retriever I'd also suggest to either use mining drones (for systems with security rating 1.0 and 0.9) or small scout drones to fend off npc pirates (also known as "beltrats").
Skills would be - drones V (ability to control one drone a level, ofc less than 5 would work too) - mining drone operation I (higher levels mean they mine more in a given time) - scout drone operation I (enables you to use small scout drones, further levels get you more drone control range)

After the Retriever the next step is the mighty (and expensive) Hulk.

As mentioned, go for the retreiver and then the hulk. Do also train up for drones, in hi-sec they should take care of any rats for you.
Use EveMon - it will show you the best route to get there and help you plan the current and future skills you'll need.

A good ship that can hold you over until the Retriever is a Vexor. It can support the drones and a decent number of miners. We could keep talking about this all day but you're too busy reading my sig instead.

Another excellent ship to have before the retriever is the Osprey.
DO NOT buy the Procurer, it is an utter waste of money, and can be outclassed in almost every respect by the Osprey or the Vexor
Also, just want to put this out there.... but a Rokh/Apocalypse/Hyperion (Battleships with 8 turret slots) can out mine a Retriever. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Edited by: Chigger Troutslayer on 27/03/2009 20:08:06 All good advice above, I might also add in the Scythe Minmatar cruiser as a decent interim mining ship. Not sure what race frigates and cruisers you are going to be training, but if its Minmatar the Scythe is a nice little miner. I'd recommend the mining cruisers for combat focused pilots that want to do a little mining on the side. If you want to be the best miner you can be and are not combat focused, go straight for the Retriever and then Hulk as others have said.
Edit: Just re-read your OP and see your Gallente, so the Scythe is not for you.
