What exactly is 'Chaining' and how do you do it?

Mainly done in 0.0 space where the BS rats give 1m+ bounty...
It is really simple to be honest, you kill the BS's in a spawn and leave the frigates thus allowing the BS rats to respawn. If you have a system to yourself you can get spawns in a few different belts and rotate through them as the BS respawn. The benefit is a known constant income, the downside is that if you are keeping these spawns it does not open up room for faction spawns, so if you are after the big prizes then chaining is not really optimal.
Or, this is what chaining was and how it worked when I lived in 0.0 2 years ago <-------------------------------------------------> "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." -Albert Einstein |

Edited by: Tom Peeping on 27/03/2009 22:15:14 Long story short...
You get what you started with if you leave ships alive... you get a random new spawn if you kill everything.
Thus "chaining" is the process of killing everything in belts that have poor spawns, and killing only the BS's in belts that have good spawns.... the end goal to be that every single belt in the system has a good spawn.
Trust me... once you get to where you have a system full of 3 1.5 mill bounties in each and every belt you warp into, you can start earning a LOT of isk... Warp... earn 4.5 mil, warp... earn 4.5 mil, etc... To be honest, it gets even better, but not everyone can get to the systems with better rats than that.
Some people will tell you chaining no longer works... this rumor is largely due to the fact that chaining used to mean something different than it does now... That old method no longer works. Thus people who tell you that chaining doesnt' work... and those who tell you it does are both correct... they just mean different things.
As a quick FYI... I've done some timed studies. Killing everything to get faction spawns (called farming) for a specific time versus chaining for the same period of time in the same system. Chaining won hand's down, even though one of the faction drops was a 400 mil faction implant during the farming session. I'd seriously recommend you consider chaining if you want real isk. Granted, I only compared for a few days, so more would really trully be necessary for a statistically significant sample size, but the difference was enough that I just didn't bother... I was already convinced to switch to chaining.
Quick edit... I've noticed that something seems a little different since this last patch... I haven't studied to find out what the changes are though, but I do notice that empty belts seem to fill faster than they used to... if I wait a mo in a belt... something will generally warp in. I don't know what that does to my old comparison yet.
