Last night a fleet of 13 assorted PIE ships jumped into an engagement with around 21 terrorist pilots rom an vaiety of terrorist Minmatar corps...
It was a fun battle apart from the fact that at least half our pilots had issues activating modules and actually taking part.
PIE pilot Archbishop has made this half serious half humourous video from his perspective using footage from the battle. Please bear in mind that though some of this footage looks like a series of screenshots it is in fact real time actual video footage as Archbishop saw it last night
The links can be found HERE
Please right click and download it ratherthan stream it as Archbishops's bandwith is limited.
Enjoy

Ouch. Aggression bug sure kickin' the nads out of fleet battles...Is he on dial up by chance? They are getting hit the hardest with this agression bug thing going around. People with higher connections than dial-up are not so badly hit by the lag because they have the bandwith to make up for it. Not to mention his recording media program helped lag him for the the fleet battle.
So its not just Dial-up folks who are feeling the agression bug. Cable/DSL/ISDN users get it as well, just not as bad.
There is also another factor of lag which has to do with your graphics card and drivers. I personally have a GeForce 4 Ti4600 card. I had 61.76 driver version and my lag was horrible for fleet battles....like 1 frame per 3 seconds. Almost like your buddy in the vid. So I took a drastic measure and rolled back my drivers to 52.16 and I have increased my FPS by 30% from what I had with 61.76 driver version. Now I have 1/2 a second of lag if at all.
Also, glad to see that Amarrians are willing to go into a battle with uneven numbers. Makes for good courage especially when the outcome of the battle is in your favor. Unfortunately, just not this time.

Fun Video! :)
A good example of technology needing to keep up with players actions/abilities. Bigger more organized corps, more fleet on fleet love..bigger pipes all around. Very troubling. I have a decent system and I get lagged when there are more than 20 ships in my area of view

Can someone tell me what the aggression bug is?
AFAIK most if not all of PIE has broadband, I am not certain the lag was strictly network load by itself.
I am inclined to point at something on the server side.

afaik, its to do with the caching of war status and the criminal flag.
When you first warp into a grid with lots of enemies, the war flag has to be downloaded for each one and held in cache, its gets more complicated with the criminal flags on top of that. For some reason the cache expires and it has to do the whole thing again lagging your comp out on already slow battle scenes.
thats what makes empire war so crap really, the client side lag jumped with the criminal flags from your war enemies and their drones, it makes it worse if you face multiple corps like you do with different sets of wars as well most likely as a check as to be made against gang members and if they get flagged to you or not.
Thats how I understand it anyway, imo - criminal flags should not even appear with war enemies, its not needed and only lags the client, between that and the checks on gang status, you can see why whole gangs have ctd'd
The best thing you can do is run logserver, get some lbw's of battles and send them in to CCP and hopefully they can find a solution which stops the horrible lag.

I'm using 1mbit ADSL and this is just like my experience.
I was only in a frigate but it went from being 100% shields and armor to me being in a pod in an instant, I actually saw the mail icon blink while I still saw myself being 100% shields and armor, notifying me of my demise.

And with 2.4Ghz Pentium4, 1 GB 333mhz RAM and a GeForce4 Ti4200 128MB... this shouldn't be hardware problem.
I disabled the sound which usually frees up LOTS of frames. I also wasn't as zoomed out as Archbishop, seeing only my vessel and Spore's doomed typhoon.

It's the agression checking that causes this. Should be fixed next patch

I'm glad you all enjoyed the video. I use a very high powered system and a very fast cablemodem. I've filmed battles before and have virtually no decrease in performance. I also used a dedicated harddrive just for video so it's completely off the main game HD on my comptuer. I know FRAPS slows it a little bit but this was really ridiculous. I fired two shots in five minutes.
The entire battle was lagged. When I jumped into system it took over a minute to load. As soon as I got in the lag was tremendous.
This wasn't a normal lag experience. A little lag is expected. This was like being paralyzed. So I put the video together in anger to have a little fun and make me laugh. I made it in about 45 minutes and it's not very polished but its funny. I wanted to laugh. It did that.......... click.... click...... click

It's the exact same things as what Zombie did, you may not attack in "safe-areas" (empire/within sentry range) without loosing your ship.
