so my Vista 64 keeps closing eve because of its "Data Execution Prevention", this is happening even after I have set it so that it doesnt stop eve as per the instruction provided by windows,
"Change Data Execution Prevention settings
Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature that helps prevent damage from viruses and other security threats by monitoring your programs to make sure they use system memory safely.
If you choose to protect all programs, you can still turn off DEP for individual programs. If you suspect that a program does not run correctly when DEP is turned on, check for a DEP-compatible version of the program or an update from the software publisher before you change any DEP settings.
Click to open System.
Click Advanced System Settings. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Under Performance, click Settings.
Click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.
To turn off DEP for an individual program Select the check box next to the program that you want to turn off DEP for, and then click OK.
If the program is not in the list, click Add. Browse to the Program Files folder, find the executable file for the program (it will have an .exe file extension), and then click Open."
So, since this doesnt work, eve keeps closing and windows keeps telling me its DEP, what else can I do to prevent this from happening again?

Same here, Eve is triggering DEP to go off all the time.
What a mess, first the fitting screen crashes if you so much as touch it and now the game randomly crashes often due to eve doing something DEP doesn't like.

I'm also having this problem, I've tried turning it off for all exe in the CCP folder and the problem is that it won't allow to turn DEP off for 'ExeFile.exe' in CCP\EVE\bin. "This program must run with Data Execution Protection (DEP) enabled. You cannot turn off DEP for this program."
The 'ExeFile' is the program causing the DEP.
An easy way to cause the crash on my Vista 32 is to have a fitting screen open and activate another ship. Works every time for me. ---

Same error on random base - could crash while jumping, quiting, open fiting and so on. Vista 32. I guess it's because of shadows enabled by default, tried to turn them off - still appears on screen. Waiting for fix.

Its totaly at ramdom after actions in eve. Unfortunatly i havent found the one action that triggers it always in my case. Setting Vista in its behaviour didnt prove for me to be a solution to the problem. __________________________________

Adding myself to this wonderful thread. The problem has become progressively worse. Happened once, and now it happens every time I change ships in station twice (ie: I usually can switch ships one time, but it consistently crashes if I then jump into another).
Also seeing it happen on fitting changes.
Attempted DEP exemption: eve.exe (the bootstrap) - did not stop the error. exefile.exe (in ./bin) - DEP tells me I can't exempt it, and it has to run in DEP mode.
Attempted to delete cache folder - same result.
Attempted complete removal and re-copy of client folder from a working alt's install - same result.
Weird thing is, clients in other folders still run fine (for now).

I had the same problem when i first started playing EVE on my new computer. DEP crashing the client at every turn of the hat. I found a way to completly shut down dep period, after that the client still crashed but it stopped telling me it was dep, so i just turned it back on and for some reason i never crashed again. perhaps it just needed to reset itself or something. so here's the sight hope it helps. http://vistasupport.mvps.org/disable_data_execution_prevention.htm

Same problem. Mine happens upon leaving stations.

Sucks that my options are to turn on DEP for ALL programs, except EVE. (leading to exponential frustration as I try to add everything I use to an exception list, post-crashes)

Does anyone know if anything has been done to address this issue? I just reformatted and reloaded Vista as 64-bit and suddenly have this issue all the time. From what I understand (perhaps incorrectly), this is an EVE issue, not a Windows one. I searched the forum, but can't seem to see that anything has been or will be done.

This is a CCP issue. There is no patch available to fix this problem thus far. So your kinda on your own. Maybe windows 7 will help with this. My computer is 100% updated and running the optinal programs from microsoft and it still crashes. I love this game and feel like I've been robbed because I pay for an account that I can't even play half the time. Hopefully CCP will create a patch and fix this problem.

Issue began yesterday evening (GMT -5).
Thus far I have disabled DEP, and Uninstalled/Re-Installed the EVE Client... This Appeared to resolve the issue... Until an Hour Ago.
The Client crashed, and went to Windowed Mode after the program reported that it was "Closed"... From there the startup issue resumed it's behavior.
Vista is Up To Date (32bit), as are all relevent drivers for video and sound.
... That being said... Who Dropped The Ball, and when can we expect to have this resolved?

its a DEP error, not a eve client error.
I have Vista, all up to date. The only program DEP closes for me is IE8, probably the one program out of everything on the computer it shouldnt
I have it set to be ignored in the DEP settings but it still closes IE dispite this. Ive tried all sorts but DEP still keeps closing IE.
Its bugged DEP from my experiance. If there was a way to remove the dam thing it would be great.

These DEP issues are probably either hardware related (run MemTest for a day) or a problem in the EVE client (buffer overflows). IIRC x64 systems are hardcoded to employ DEP. The only thing I can suggest is that you run Memtest to exclude the hardware, then send some crash reports directly to CCP in a petition so they can analyse the issue. Frustrating, I know :)

Makes no difference. When you read into DEP it says if a program keeps getting shut down by DEP look online for a DEP compatible version og the program you are trying to run. So CCP any chance of this compatible program please as at the moment i am paying for a game that since Dominion i cannot play anymore. Not very useful as we are in wormhole space and i need my connection to be good. Worked fine pre Dominion and had nothing but problems since.

Right i have FU**ING had enough now! Can someone from CCP please comment on this forum as to wether or not you are actually doing anything about this crash issue. I cant do anything! I cant run missions i cant go back to our WH i cant do F*CK ALL! If i dont get a reply to this then i am not renewing my subscription. I am not paying for a game that i can no longer play! I have just downloaded and installed all the latest Vista updates, i have deleted and reinstalled Eve and i have been on the Data Execution Prevention sites and they say that you need to find a DEP compatable version of the program you are trying to run. NOTHING WORKS! Can we have an answer on this please i am at the very end of my patience now. Thankyou.

I think my computer's BIOS settings has such a DEP setting. Which is, iirc, set to off.
Oh, and don't change stuff in the bios if you don't know what you are doing. Edit: Ah, there are perhaps both "hardware" DEP and a "software" DEP. Possibly two different things.

Got to Control Panel icon, click System.
Click the Advanced tab, and in the Startup and Recovery area, click Settings.
In the SystemStartup area, click Edit.
Where it says "/NoExecute=OptIn" Change it to "/NoExecute=AlwaysOff" (without the quotes)

Or if you have admin rights you can do it using command prompt: Click Start, Run, type cmd and click ok. Paste the following in the command promt and click enter "bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff" (without the quotes)

x64 systems are certainly not "hardcoded" to do DEP. If you turn off the option in both hardware and software, it's off.
Every time you're seeing a DEP error, it almost certainly means that you were about to crash the client. DEP itself is not the culprit, so disabling it won't fix the real problem. "Crashing" clients due to DEP errors can be chalked up to one or more of three causes:
1) Wonky-ass video drivers (uninstall any freaky ones, install the normal ones) 2) Wonky-ass antivirus programs (uninstall them all and see if that helps) 3) Software that shouldn't be running--cheats, hacks, macros, viruses, worms, etc.
So, painful as it may sound, do these four things: 1) Uninstall all anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-anything software. Get rid of all of it. 2) Uninstall any customized video drivers. Reinstall the latest drivers from your GPU provider's site. 3) Uninstall anything designed to "enhance your EVE experience". *ahem* 4) Run a comprehensive scan across your computer. IMHO: ClamWIN, AVG, Microsoft Defender, pick any two.
If, after all of these steps are completed, you're still getting errors, do this:
1) Disconnect all other computers from your local network. 2) Install a fresh, legitimate copy of Windows on your machine. 3) Visit Windows Update and run it (and reboot) enough times that nothing new comes up. 4) Install a fresh copy of EVE from CCP's site.
If you're still getting errors after completing these four steps, go ahead and reconnect the other computers on your network, and I (and CCP) would now be quite interested in hearing details of the problem you're experiencing.
