I'm new to exploring and would like a few pointers to which ship (and why) you'd choose for exploration (wormholes and regular sites), given I can fly all amarr and gallente ships up to and including battleships.
The actual scanning is new to me too but I found several nice guides for that so you don't need to delve into that too much.
One thing though, I will be doing the exploring entirely solo. So I am leaning towards some type of warp-while-cloaked ship. There's still a few to choose from though, so what are your thoughts on that?
Thanks in advance =)

You can explore in just about any frigate with enough cpu for scanner, cloak, mwd and wcs is a good idea. But you'd prolly be fine as long as you dont *afk uncloaked.

Assuming you want to do something other float around in w-space then you are going to need something better than a covert ops.
Salvaging, hacking, archeology, gas mining are the typical things you'll want to do. The first 3 are probably easier to achieve as a solo explorer. I would say that having a drone bay is an advantage, sleepers tend to love targetting drones so while they are a poor attack they can be a life saving decoy.
I'm currently exploring in a myrm with a drone bay full of light T1 drones. I have a prober and rails in the highs and a code breaker (hacking) and analyzer (arch) in the mids. The lows are tank.
Bare in mind that if you trigger a sleeper "fleet" you will probably die. Only large remote repping BS gangs seem to survive. With that in mind, fly an expendable ship and try to stay aligned and alert - think ninja! [center] |

Ive been thinking of taking a domi in there.
It has more than enough dps to kill the smaller sleeper spawns; and has a big enough drone bay that losing drones doesn't really matter.
Plus its not that much more expensive than a BC :)

The mass of a Domi can be quite a factor, though, especially if the wormholes are getting unstable. I'd consider a Myrm for doing the same kind of thing with a much lower mass.

Now we're getting some nice info starting to trickle in =) Good point about the hacking modules etc, I'd like to actually DO stuff when I'm in there yes. And also good point about ship mass. Smaller could be better in some cases here I suppose.

I've taken a nice passive omni-tanked Drake in and was quite pleased with it's performance. Had 5 HM launchers, a salvager, scanner, and a hacking module fitted with it.
You don't need a cloak if you move around every 10-20 mins. When you first get into the system set up 5-6 safespots, and randomly warp between them. Makes it harder for someone to pin you down.

Drake, Nighthawk, Dominix.
You ain't gonna kill **** in a cov ops cruiser btw, your tank will break in a few seconds if the spawn is anything bigger then a cruiser and couple of frigs in a low class wormhole.

To fight sleeper rats you should always use faction or better even officer fitted battleships.
If you use a regular T2 fit you will be torn apart by them!

Pff, nobody pirates in w-space. Officer mods give so much benefit over T2, the Cost-to-Benefit ratio clearly skews in their favor. Be sure to announce your presence in local once you enter w-space, in case anybody needs help either finding a WH or dealing with sleepers. Accept any fleet requests, so your newfound friends can warp right to you. ----
