Since Apocrypha they are gone and there is not even an option as before to turn them on/off. Does anybody know why?
Were they such a burden on the graphic engine?

I was wondering the same thing. Needs more engine trails and the old (perhaps slightly updated) cyno effect.

I agree, i don't know why they change things that really don't need to be changed (not completely at least). Just right the cyno effect, the scrambling effect, the sensor booster effects and even blaster maybe.

Indeed.
Bring back ship trails, old cynos and make stargates make a louder sound when they go off, so I don't need to bloody keep watching it all the time while camping.
Oh, and bring back the old capital ship jump animation. The look of a new wormhole opening just to bring in a behemoth of carnage was indescribably awesome! Now it looks like any frigate jumping a gate .

Yeah, I'd understand the trails removal if we had some spiffy looking new engine effects. I'd say overall we got stiffed with the new effects in Apoc. Except for a couple of turret effects (mainly autocannon and laser) and the new stargate jump thingie, everything else is underwhelming or worse then before.
I remember when the gates on SISI had the cool new particle effects (I think this was pre-QR). Well, those were removed never to be seen again. The NOS effect displayed at the fanfest - same. I'm afraid what we're gonna get when the new space and planets show up. Get ready to be disappointed. ...

The thing is, missiles still have trails so the engine capability is still there. I do not understand CCP sometimes...
It was an OPTIONAL effect to begin with. Why removing it completely?

Yeah, trails that appeared way behind and in front of the ship whilst in warp. Good ridance IMO.

Never had that problem myself. Maybe it was due to low framerate or desync?

From what I heard was that pre-apo's release they would cause severe crashes on SiSi. Perhaps its removal only temporarily.

Agreed. I much prefer the old cyno, cap ship jump effects and engine trails to the new ones, which are imo a little bland.

I miss the long, swooshing trails. You used to be able to fly a ship and see where it had been in the past 5 seconds. Now that is long since gone and we have been slowly dumbed down.
I am only speculating, but it is my opinion CCP is slowly phasing things out of the game so they don't have to continue to update them. I mean, are you going to stop playing EVE because they removed ship trails? No. Or cyno effects? No. CCP knows that, and it is my conclusion after much ranting and begging and forum posting that
CCP doesn't care.
Which upsets me. Because I care.

This is probably true for most people, but in my case, like Tesco say, 'every little helps'. -

I would wager instead that it's mostly over optimization. Results from "the need for speed" initiative. This goes along the lines as nerfing the launchable drones from max 15 to just five. Also limiting the shooting cycle to four instead of two seconds.
Like the way we had a sound in engine AB cycle and the engine exhaust got smaller as the cycle was near end. Then again maybe it was not that realistic as usually if a single "cycle" is nearing its end, the engine should still be active and not boost the AB from time to time. -------------------------------------------------

If too many people like too many things with the game, they will create lag by actually playing it.
So because people liked it, it had to go.
Its all very logicalish.
