i'm sure that this post has been done many times before... if someone pays you far to much for an item.. do you pay em back or laugh.
I was selling missiles at 160 each and someone (i won't name) paid 249000.00 per item. nice and they bought 2500 !!! now they are an alt lookin at thier history. but should i be nice or should i be nasty? they have not contacted me in anyway pleading or begging so i think they can afford it. but i was interested in your thoughts..

Do as you see fit.
But here's a question for you: Do you see the other trader as a neighbor, or your enemy?
If he's a neighbor, then treat him as you would have him treat you.
If he's the enemy, well:

My view is that you should at least wait for them to ask for it back. Lots of people do things for reasons I can't understand, I wouldn't want to interfere unless they asked. If they do I would be inclined to give the money back. We have all made similar mistakes. I've got about 50% success rate with an evemail along the lines of 'Sorry, I typo'd, it would be very kind of you if you could refund some part of my overpayment'

It depends entirely on the age of the character.
If he's some veteran knows better and can shrug off the loss, then I appreciate the bonus. If it's some noob who didn't realize how easy it is to screw up an order and just lost all his hard earned ISK, then I generally send it back.
That said, I usually don't notice. There have been months where I've had over 100B flow through my wallet and I generally run Kwint Industries off the bottom line. I don't scrutinize the individual sales, just so long as the end of every week I've got enough to pay the investors and by some fancy toys.

If it's that much of a problem for you, you could pass the isk to me and I'll decide whether to give it back or not...

I sold a single Defender I a year an a half ago for 246 million isk to a character that was deleted a week later. I still have the cash in case anyone asks for it back, but no one ever has. There are a lot of ways that can happen, and in almost all cases, someone was up to no good. Maybe your counter-party was setting predatory orders and hit the wrong button. I see no moral dilemma unless they buyer contacts you.
I'd take the money.

This is a related story, not really a response...
I was helping a friend get started on eve. I gave him 10M isk so he could buy some skill books, and a few starter ships. He went to purchase a destroyer, and instead of paying 600k, he paid 6M. I laughed at the mistake, and told him "live and learn". He was not willing to take it so lightly. He blamed everything but himself. He blamed shady sellers on the market. He even blamed CCP for not making the font visible enough to make the distinction.
"But I scrutinized it!" he yelled back at me. Now this guy is a friend, and I kind of feel bad for laughing at friends, but this line was just classic.
In the end, I realized something about myself. I am much more thick-skinned when it comes to the market. I have made some mistakes in purchasing before that resulted in losses (nothing major thankfully). I never once asked for any of my ISK back. In my short trading career, I've had a few buyers pay more than my ask, but never more than 40% or so of the total purchase. I've never had anyone ask me for a refund. If someone were to do so, I don't think I'd return the money. I'd probably give the advice, "You should scrutinize it a little more next time."

Do what is in your nature. In fact that is all you can do.
It is very popular in the forums to spout Darwinistic claptrap about the survival of the fittest an who deserves what, etc. This really informs everyone else that the person talking is probably white, suburban, and has an inflated sense of self importance.
Born on third base and thinks they hit a triple! Can I get a Cricket metaphor, please?
The game mechanics reward lies, deceit, and subterfuge to some extent. It also rewards hard work, teamwork, and and research.
Decide.

The market rewards dumb luck, hard work, attention to detail, research, and those willing to take their lumps and still go back for more.
It is a beautiful, efficient, cruel system.
It doesn't care if you're white, suburban, and have an inflated sense of ego....it'll take your money all the same. It rewards those who are correct, and punishes those who are wrong. It doesn't care if you made a typo, got sloppy, or simply "didn't know".
It doesn't give freebies, it doesn't give you a break, and it doesn't "help you out, just this one time because you're new".
That sounds pretty Darwin-istic to me.

I'd probably file a petition just to make sure the isk was legit. In similar cases the GMs have been known to reverse transactions, and if this happens to you it's quite possible to end up with a negative wallet balance. --- 20:1 mineral compression ISRC Racing, Season 7 - schedule |

Hi all... first post in MD though I have been lurking in the shadows for several months... but this post deserves a comment from me...
One of my charaters is a station trader... too darn lazy to haul stuff about I guess. It's more of a hobby then vocation.
Anyway... I had a buy order for 3 drakes some time ago and was rushing to beat downtime (lesson learned) and I thought I hit the decimal but apparently missed. In any event, the buy order price went from +28-m to +280-m... and 3 drakes showed up immediately in my ship bay. Those little buggers cost me +840-m.
Dashed off a note to congradulate the seller on my stupidity and went back to trading. Took about 4 days to claw it back.
You make mistakes and live with them and learn.
Would I give isk back if asked... certainly.
Would I cry about it and let it affect my game play? No way. It's just a game and can easily gotten back with a little time and effort...
have fun and fly safe...

Been there recently Krylon...
I recently sold a PLEX for 313,000 instead of 313,000,000.
I wrote the buyer telling him that my loss was his gain & to enjoy the PLEX. LOL
