I hate feeling this stupid. Just started playing this afternoon... In 4 hours of playing I have managed to get to the science station and get my capsule out of the ship. That's it. I want to do the tutorial that start you on missions, but I can't even find that. I am used to the way WoW took you by the hand and lead you through a couple of levels... I assumed that the insurance agent tutorial would do the same thing, but so far, no luck..
Could someone take a few minutes and get me headed in the right direction. First step: get my capsule back in the ship and find the right tutorial.

So you've learned the first lesson: EVE is not WOW.
To find your stuff, go to the ASSETS tab in the sidebar. Right click -> set destination where your stuff is.
To find another tutorial agent and/or refind the one you have, hit F12 and to go Career Funnel.

OK.. got the tutorial thing...
Two more questions for now...
How do I get the capsule back in the shuttle and where to I get my first "books" to start learning while I am doing missions?
Oh, one more thing.. How do I select which ship (rookie ship or shuttle) I leave the station with?

on the side bar there is a ships tab, click that and a window will open with all the ships you have in that station, right click and say make active, or board ship (something like that), or just drag it into the station background to make it active. and whatever ship graphic you see is the ship you will leave the station with.
anyways posting questions (as long as they aren't proceeded by giant whines, and are asked somewhat intelligently) is about 10 steps in the right direction more then what most people seem to make...

Click on the ships icon on the left. when you see the window pop open with your ships in it right click the ship you want and click "make active" I do believe.
Just don't give up hope , this game is awesome on so many different levels! 7.1m casual player looking for corp |

Hit the ships tab on the sidebar. Drag an assembled ship into the open area in the station screen, or just right click -> make active.

I'm a few weeks in, and things started getting a bit more understandable after the first week (about 6-8 hours). You'll find that everything actually makes sense, it's just getting the familiarity of the mechanics down.

Thanks for the info on ship selection... Selected my "rookie ship" and warped to asteroid fields... no asteroids. No mining possible. Warped to all of them.. still nothing. Am I doing something wrong or is there a trick to mining?

If you're trying to mine,
a) get out of noobship. Get a t1 mining frigate, and
b) More than likely you're in a populated area. Especially if you're Caldari, many systems have been stripmined dry near hubs.
If you're done with the tutorial, I recommend going out to a less populated area. Open your starmap. Under one of the filters, you can show average pilots in space in the last 30 minutes. Find one with a low population and go there. I'd recommend while you are still learning the basic game mechanics you stay in hisec, so use the security status filter as well-Hisec is .5 or above.

there are a lot of useful filters for the starmap, color by security status, pilots in space, pilots docked and active, ships destroyed in the last hour, ships destroyed in the last 24 hours, pods in the last 1/24 hours, some of my most used color filters. there is also a sovereignty filter, but well I'm not so interested in that.

You have to understand that there is no path. WoW had a mission path from 1 through 80. This game you just do whatever you want. Theoretically you could just fly frigates the whole time if that's all you wanted to fly (thought I'd recommend at least going to T2 frigs). Working up skills makes you stronger, but not to the degree that a level 80 vs level 1 would be.

If there's a number in the lower right of the ship icon, it means the ship is packaged.. in which case you need right click and assemble ship before you can make active... welcome to Eve, I'm sure someone will welcome you properly soon enough

also a quick thing u should learn early on is that u can do anything u want
dont feel like mining any more? then just train gunnery skills and start fighting
think ur caldari ships look fugly? just train for a different race's ships
to get skill books u buy them off of the market tho make sure u do ALL the tutorials as some tutorials give skill books for free
also id say that the only thing that a guild and c orp share are that they are a group of ppl, other wise vastly different ================================================

Edited by: Glock Harkonnen on 02/04/2009 05:50:25 surprised no one has mentioned it yet but one thing to wrap your head around early on is;
Ships are like socks. You will change them often and lose a few.
Don't get too attached to them as they are tools as opposed to an actual end-goal :)
Working and training up to fly a battleship for instance as quickly as you can is not necessarily a good idea. Costs you a lot of ISK and you won't be able to fit it or fly it adiquately if you straightline into one. Sure you'll have the ship but when you lose it in a half second of carelessness (or just plain misfortune) the first couple will hurt :)
After that it'll just be another day in EVE :)
Welcome from a fellow noobster.

well put.....plus u have no idea the power of frigs until u either can solo a lvl 2 mish with them or have seen a swarm take down a battleship
plus ull want ur frig back after u get to the snails pace of a battleship (add capitals are even slower )
never sell ur old ship to pay for the new one cause ull need that old frig once the cruiser is kablewy ================================================

that actually brings up one of the great things about EVE.
Unlike other games where you purchase something then (oops I got the wrong thing) can only sell it for half of what you paid :)
You can actually sell for more than you paid if done correctly. (MUCH more if you are creative). Trade is one of the MAJOR fields of endeavor. SO in effect ships for example can actually be a way of socking back some ISK for a rainy day if you're so inclined. Watch the market and the last really big biggie for a total noobie is....
NEVER just click buy while using the market. Look at it and explore the interface a bit and you will see why. The market is player driven (seen Veldspar sell for 10,000.00 ISK a unit) when it is truly not worth that much :)
I paid 280,000.00 ISK for a 28,000.00 skillbook about day four into my EVE experience. Watch the zeros :) There is very little mercy in EVE :) But honor can be found.

Another thing you will learn. People are usually more helpful in Eve than in WoW. The Caldari noob channel aside most your questions will be answered honestly as long as you are polite in asking them and don't rant if nobody answers straight away.

while this is true be careful! for some people there is nothing better than to scam a new player on everything he owns...and in this game its legal! no getting your stuff back from a GM.

You buy the books from the market. Click the market tab and then search for the book you are looking for. They can be in your station or many jumps away so be careful to look at the distance.
You will also get quite a few useful books from the tutorial agent and the follow up agents.

Did you warp to the asteroid field to mine rocks or to do the tutorial mission to mine some rocks? This one stumped me for a while too when I started a few weeks ago. If it is the tutorial mission, when you exit the station, right click in space and select the option to jump to the deadspace room for the agent mission. The tutorial mission I know states to go to an asteroid field but if you actually go to the mission like they want you to there is a big ol rock of veldspar waiting for you to be melted.

When you fly into the belt make sure you have your tactical display turn on. There is a toggle for it on the left side of the round ship status indicator in the lower center of your HUD. This is the mode where you see your ship's horizontial "plane" with the concentric distance circles around you. If you don't have this turned on, the asteroids are almost impossible to see. I still make that mistake sometimes even being an experienced miner. I'll fly into a belt and think it has been completely mined out (which does happen, but is not likely your issue).
hope this helps! Master of the (Orca Class) Deep Space Exploration And Mining Vessel "Long Shot" |

Having come from the same place myself, I found myself floundering around for quite sometime, and even managed to train and save up enough to buy a Retriever, only to be suicide-ganked in highsec the second time I took it out for a spin. At that point I quit and stayed away for quite some time. Then, I met up with some old friends who I found out played and joined up in their corp and that was a game changer. Being able to bounce questions off players and tag along on missions made all the difference in the world.
If you'd like, look up LG Industries (ticker: |LG| ). We have our headquarters stationed in Dodixie so if you're nearby look us up.

Edited by: Sig Rethban on 07/04/2009 21:33:24 If you warp to an asteroid belt, you will typically be 50 km to 150 km from the rocks. Don't expect to see asteroids out your window on warpping in. However, they should show up on your overview if you have them selected (note the small white triangle on the overview for the options).
I use a small fast frigate (my Caldari Condor with afterburner does 1011 m/s) to bookmark the rocks at either end of the actual belt, so that my slow miner can warp directly to them.
Note that little white triangles in the UI can be clicked for menus. Pretty much everything can be clicked or right-clicked for some sort of menu or function.
Also, there are often pop-up warning messages. I don't recommend checking "don't tell me again", unless you really really mean it. Sometimes those are handy for preventing accidental clicks; like when you have a smartbomb fitted to your ship (I love using smartbombs, but they do require extreme caution in their use to avoid the wrath of Concord).
