You've gone without for years, but now you've got a girlfriend. She loves everything about you... except your dog.
Which do you choose?

Edited by: Jacob Mei on 02/04/2009 06:25:12 The dog is loyal without question, will gladly lay down its life to protect you and your family, never asks for the credit card and will never take you on a five hour cloths shoping marathon asking for your opinion only to ignore it in favor of her own and in exchange only wants beef flavored kibble and a daily walk through the park where you pick up its ****. Will the girl friend follow that example? |

if the dog is one of those little snippy annoying sonsofbiches, choose the women.
otherwise your woman should never make you pick. if she can't make the sacrifice to let you keep the dog you love do you really want her around? what is next? your fathead brett favre? the kegerator? internet pron?
mark my words, you let this woman drive your dog out of your home you might as well just castrate yourself, put on a collar and leash that matches her purse and take her last name when you get married. Oh, don't sweat proposing or picking out a ring, she will make these decisions for you (which you will assure your friends is all for the best because you love her and she's the best thing to ever happen to you).

Oh yes I should mention, odds are this woman that supposedly loves everything about you is either 1) tripping on her own fantasy about her image of you (or who she wants you to be) and not who you really are or 2) is "testing the waters" to see how much control she has over you. Either way is bad, so I would man up and tell her the dog stays.

Tell her that your faithful dog is part of your identity, and if she hates the dog, then she hates you.
Alas, you can't have sex with your Dog.
...Legally.
So... I'd tell her to stop being a ***** and accept the doggie. I'd say there were worse aspects of being in a relationship too.. like 12 hour long fleet Ops in EVE, BSG/Firefly Marathons, blowing obscene amounts of cash on new Hardware rather than her...
All that good stuff. |

You don't ask people to get rid of the things they love without a very good reason. If you love that dog and the girl knows it, I would be on my toes with the girl. Unless ofcourse she has a medical reason for not wanting to be around dogs/pets. Without that very good reason to justify such a request, I doubt she really loves the person you really are.
That said, is she asking you to get rid of the dog or just stating, that she doesn't really care for it? You can have a relationship without loving everything about the other person. So is there really a need for making a choice or are you just making a big deal out of it?

Under no circumstances would I ever give up a dog. As I have a dog, I know how much I love him, his little ways, his loyalty and faithfulness. He is without ulterior motives and wears his heart on his sleeve (as he's a GSD, his ears give away how he feels!).
If a girl made me choose, there'd be no choice. The woofer every time.

For some reason I find something wrong with this. If the dog is found to be a snippy, annoying, little *****, then why would the guy have it in the first place
If the lady gets so far as to make me think that she may be worth getting into a "relationship" with her then she would already have found out that she loves my dog. Not sure if that really expresses my opinion or not but I will leave it at that.

Agreed. I have yet to meet a guy who has a dog that can be classify as a "yipper" who was not either elderly or living with a woman who was the orginial owner of the dog.
Something you should use to your advantage is you can argue that your dog will accept your girlfriend as part of the pack and defend her with its life in time. Nothing says "dont mess with this couple!" than the pair being escorted by a German Shepard, Doberman, Rot or a wolf dog (my mom had one when she was growing up on the south side of Chicago, never needed to leesh it and she enjoyed nightly walks in the neighbourhood. No one messed with her when they saw a Shepard/Wolf by her side). -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

I could a few silly little habits and useless things that I'd give up if only I had a real incentive to. Doesn't mean I dislike them myself or that I'm 'weak' to not do without them myself but they're just not THAT valuable to me.

When you bought/accepted the dog you accepted a responsibility to take care of it. The only reason to give up a pet is because you're no longer capable of taking care of it properly.
Girlfriends come and go. Pets are family, and thus for life (yours or theirs). ______________________________________________ -My respect can not be won, only lost. It's given freely and only grudgingly withdrawn. |

I think the point hes trying to make is that if you are willing to change the very fabric of who you are, or let your girlfriend mold you into her ideal boyfriend/husband then clearly something is wrong with you and the relationship.
You shouldnt have to change anything about yourself to fit your potental spouses ideals, to do that only invites friction down the line and changes the relationship from a partnership to a near master/servant situation. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

The dog without a second moments thought.
They don't get mad when you look at another dog. It doesn't matter what time you come home, the dog is always happy to see you. A dog is about a 10th of the maintenance cost. A dog doesn't care where your taking it, it just wants to stick its head out the window. A dog won't up and leave you for a new owner. A dog doesn't take up 3/4 of the closet, only a corner of the room.
I'll keep my baby boy, especially since it doesn't take too much to keep him amused.

Choose the dog. No question about it.
Not least because there is no such thing as, "I love you but...".
I worked at a health clinic ages ago and the resident psychiatrist there told me that anytime someone says "but" throw out every thing that was said before it in that sentence. So, "I love you but I hate your dog" becomes "I hate your dog".
Lose the chick. She's trouble. Your dog is your best buddy...no way you can give up the dog.
-------------------------------------------------- "Of course," said my grandfather, pulling a gun from his belt as he stepped from the Time Machine, "there's no paradox if I shoot you!"

Polonius said it best: To thine own self be true.
If its a change that causes you to no longer be who you really are then you shouldnt make that change whatever it may be. I think for alot of men the companionship of a dog is one of those things that is such a part of us (look at most if not all cultures, the dog is always by mans side) that someone who asks you to get rid of your dog is like asking you to get rid of your best friend.
Personally I think it says alot about a man who gets rid of their dog just for a girl, and theres not alot of good in what that action says. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

My dog almost cost me my MARRIAGE when I refused to move anywhere that didnt allow pets. (We were living with friends at the time and she wanted a place of our own) Opie is almost 15 years old now and doesnt do much except eat and sleep, not looking forward to when old age finally claims him. I can honestly say that losing him would hurt me more than losing my wife, and I've told her that. She doesnt really like the thought but she seems to understand that 15years tops the 6 that she's been with me. Beagle-Lab mix, overweight (only animal I've ever seen gain weight while on a diet), half blind, mostly deaf, and still has the softest ears I've ever felt on a dog. Love that lazy blob and if I can find a picture I'll add it.
