I just created an alt that I have been doing some mining with.
Obviously my goal is to get to the best barge when I can. But looking at the two smaller barges I noticed their cargo bays are a whole lot smaller than the industrials I can fly.
So is it best to not even bother flying barges until the largest one and would an industrial fit with miners be decent since it won't have to jet can or have someone else haul back to base and other such silliness?
Or should I jump in the smaller barges as soon as I can?

A mining frigate mines up to FOUR TIMES faster than an industrial. A mining barge mines up to FIVE TIMES faster than a mining frigate.
So, yeah... it's only an *20 difference, why would you ever want to get a barge when you can mine 20 times slower in an industrial ?

The horror, you would have to warp back and forth every 2-3 minutes in a fast-aligning frigate instead of being AFK for a couple of hours... the horror, the horror
P.S. Whenever I see an industrial mining, it makes me want to get a barge and pop the roid he's mining, just out of spite _ Create a character || Fit a ship || Get some ISK |

First, what you're looking for when mining is increasing your yield. You get a constant yield of m3 per cycle with a given ship/module/skill combination. Other factors like cargo hold are secondary.
Second, you might as well forget that the Procurer even exists. An Osprey or a Scythe can mine better than a Procurer, since they get bonuses to mining laser yield.
Third, the cycle varies between laser types. Normal mining lasers have a 60 second cycle, while all the strip miners and the Modulated Deep Core Miner II have 3 minute cycles. This means they'll pull in far more ore per cycle but take longer to do so; when comparing different types you need to adjust for cycle length.
Most people, if mining solo, will do what's called "jetcan mining". You jettison something to create a cargo container that holds 27,500 m3 of cargo and lasts 1-2 hours, then keep moving the ore from your mining vessel to the jetcan until it's full, and then go switch ships to a hauler to bring the ore in to a station. The drawbacks are that the ore can be stolen or flipped, and that if you run too long for whatever reason the can will pop and you'll lose it all.
Serious miners usually have extra characters along, potentially flying additional mining vessels, cargo haulers, or ships with gang bonus modules to increase mining efficiency.
Personally, I'd recommend you mine in an Osprey until you can fly a Retriever, use the Retriever until you get all the skills needed to fly a Hulk, then just jump into a Hulk. The only skill requirement for a Hulk that isn't needed for a Covetor is Exhumers III, which will take you a whole couple of days max to train. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

so the middle mining barge is still worth it? even if i don't jetcan mine? because every "pirate" and I use that word very loosely who is too scared of going into low sec and finding a real fight just sites in high sec stealing cans. I've watched every poor miner get taken by this while flying around.

I suggest mission mining. While not 100% safe you can find a mission.....mine it for a week turn it in then get another. you will be able to jet can to your hearts content. -----------------------

I was about to post something similar. You can just mine out low level missions until you know which ones have the best ore volumes. Note that there are a few level 3 missions worth looking at for this which are worth mining for a week.

be prepared for the massive noobness about to occur...
So I can keep a mission for a week before turning it in? and I thought people could still scan me out when i'm in a mission?
one more....are you speaking of the specific mining missions I've heard of, or just regular missions with asteroids in them.

And you can make 2 mil in 30 minutes just from bounties and end-mission rewards in a Caracal running easy-peasy L2 missions with a skillset that needs less than a week to train for.

As strange as this may sound - some people like to mine more than they like shooting things.

Oh.. wait.. mission belts are still there after downtime???
If this is not a troll, I will answer: **** the cargohold, the important thing in a miner ship is the mining yield. We are not talking about a tiny frigate, which *could* get serious benefits with a expanded cargohold. Now you want an Osprey with 3x Miner II and a Mining Laser Upgrade on the lows.
and remember Osprey outmines Procurer, same way Rokh outmines Retriever

but the rokh need to be babysat a LOT more to keep going, you have to stagger the lasers, empty the hold a few times per minutes etc so even if it's better on paper carpel tunnel syndrome is not worth the extra yield.

Yeah, the key is not completing the mission objective. So if the death of a rat completes the missions, then the rat must stay alive (ofcourse the barge/exhumer must tank it). Not completing the objective makes the mission reset at every DT, so the juicy roids also reappear. This is the way of the profitable mining in hisec. Of course you have to complete and hand in the mission at day 7.
Btw, the best level 2 missions for mining are: Recon 1 pocket 2 and Blockade (the roids are trapped in Blockade though so you must definitely need a Hulk with res amps and a shield booster).

how would you farm pocket 2 of the blockade? doesnt going through the gate automatically close the mission?

Cool new feature I noticed on eve-survival (the mission database) was the addition of an ore tally in some missions...pretty nice for those of you looking to mine missions.

It's not possible to farm Recon (I guess you were refering to this one) but you can farm the Blockade and many other missions. I was talking in general.

Agree, Recon 1 has roids in pocket 2, but going there completes the mission, so it can't be farmed. Blockade only has a single pockets that is not deadspace making it great for mining since you can warp to anywhere. Break their Will is a great one for common ore (veld/scord) as well, since it is not deadspace.
To answer one posters question: can you be probed down in a mission space? yes. But the advantage is that a) you are not at a static belt beacon, so to be found you HAVE to be probed down - more mental energy then some can flippers may have; and b) if your mission location is in a system of little interest to miners then it is probably of little interest to can flippers as well.

Understandable maybe, but sitting in front of the screen while mining in my I-5, I've got a good 6 hours with my Organic Chemistry textbook.
