He's encountered a load of serious hostility while in the Bruno persona. More than he has with Borat, if I recall his NPR interview correctly. This should be a good one.

Ali G initially annoyed the hell out of me, until I paid a little bit more attention and "got" the joke, at which point I did a complete about face and greatly enjoyed the discomfiture of those he was poking fun at... although I do feel that he lost it a bit towards the end. I suppose that may well be why he moved on, but personally I think he might have milked it a little bit too much. Borat wasn't particularly funny in a lot of respects in and of itself, but what was funny was the response from certain folk to the guy (on reflection I suppose that's the whole point). The sequence shot at the club with Borat singing "Throw the Jew down the well" was ***ing priceless... particular after some of the crowd joined in with gusto on the chorus. I'm quite looking forward to Red Band however. What little I've seen of the promos so far has been encouraging, and whilst it isn't exactly difficult to make the average Joe in the street look thick, it is often amusing. Hey; I like shooting fish in a barrel as much as the next man. If it doesn't* get banned in some of the more conservative parts of the USA and/or UK, then he's not doing it properly. I for one am preparing to welcome our new deliberately over-gay, troll overlord. ___________________________________________________ The game will never be over, because we're keeping the meme alive.

It's the ones that are so far out there that you just can't help but either laugh your ass off at the stupidity of it or facepalm and weep for the future of humanity. That's the sort of thing I'm talking about. And in a way, I just find it sad that people can walk right into these situations and shove their feet so far down their throats that you can't help but wonder how they're still alive. That's something I don't really enjoy, probably because some part of me truly hopes that we shouldn't be outright exterminated as a species. On the other hand, it's a good thing that there are people like Cohen who go out and expose these miscreants for what they are, so that we know that these sorts of attitudes are alive and well in society. One of the whole points of camp is that the stereotypical flaming queen is something of an underdog. Drag and swishing may be seen or portrayed as silly, but ultimately they are less noxious than the prejudices they inspire. At least the trailer I've seen leaves me with the impression that Bnno is a completely unlikable character, and that IMO makes Cohen's criticism of anti-gay prejudice a bit less sharp than it could be. And granted, I've only seen the trailer, but the trailer doesn't invite me to pay money for the movie.
