The advise I give to every new player is simple
RUN MISSIONS
RUN MORE MISSIONS
They pay quite handsomely nowadays and also teach the new players quite a few things. They also get to see various POI floating in space and see more than just their home system as they have to jump around.
I think it's far better advise for them than to mine Scordite in 1.0 for a month, that gives them a bad first impression (well those that aren't really into mining).

I did the mining thing at first. Never discovered the joy in missions. But for me the social part was what kept me going at first, along with the joy of discovering the vast multitude of modules and opporunities in Eve one by one along the way.
Been a daily player for about a year now, and my guess Seleene will have to compete with me for being the last to log out.
