Firstly, I'd like to say that I thought this forum was the most appropriate for this thread to go in... so, sorry if it wasn't (where else, then!?).
I've noticed that Jita is not only a lagfest, but also a trade center - the lagfest only means that it is the busiest. Therefore, it has several goods compared to other less busier trade centers... yet, Jita is known to have nearly 100% of every item that everyone needs for ....something.
But... as it is my personal nature, I am always curious of the beginning of things. From the first day the EVE universe came to life and people from the beta made their new accounts, logged in on the first day and started colonizing EVE Online as we know it... how did Jita start? How did it become the 'trade center' of EVE?
I've heard plenty of theories... and not facts. Does anyone have any facts?

Well, I don't remember but there was another superhub before Jita until CCP decided to nerf it. When they realized that they can't simply prevent the evolution of a system into a superhub, they left Jita alone.
Jita used to have mission agents and mining field, so people flock to Jita because it had everything that eve had to offer in empire space. So, over time, CCP begin to nerf little things like mission agents and droid fields. Today, Jita is just a trade hub and spamfest.

Yulai was the previous hub, but its geographic centrality was reduced by CCP. Jita was at that time one of the racial / regional junior hubs (along with Rens, Amarr, and Oursulaert).
A plain ol' network effect (a type of positive feedback effect) encourages people to come together in a central trade hub: each new customer encourages retailers to sell there, and each new retailer increases competition and supply, which encourages customers to go there... and so on.

When Yulai was nerfed Jita beat out the other hubs because half the players were Caladari.

There used to be a super highway which connected Jita, Yulai, and Rens all together with just a few short jumps (7 or so I think?). It basically made regional trading pointless since it was so easy to move between the most active regions and trade hubs. CCP removed this super highway and changed the routes between empire factions to make travel between them longer and more difficult. Yulai was cut off from the new trade routes and died off fairly quick. Jita obviously thrived and grew into the abomination it is today

One more reason Jita vs. everyone else: standings and broker fees.
Caldari navy was the most popular corp to work for in the good old days of not being able to switch agents, random offers and 700M isk CNRs.
Mission loot drives the trade economy. It's no coincidence trade hubs pop up near mission locations. And that regions without any market activity at all lack high quality combat agents.

Well, it happens like this.
When a male solar system falls in love with a female solar system they form a family and have baby solar systems like Jita.

As everyone knows, on the 7th day god rested. But, on the 8th day god began to think, and decided he had made things too good for his creations. So, on the 8th day, god said, "Let there be scams, and spam in local channels!" And, behold: Jita was was born unto this world.

I would suggest that Jita came to be the major trade hub it is today as a combination of the Network Effect (more retailers means more customer means more retailers) and Social Proof (they're doing it that way, so I'll do it that way too).

== Traits of Jita's Success as a Major Trade Hub ==
* 3 Regions Joined within 1 jump of each other (Jita in The Forge, Muvolailen in The Citadel, Sobaseki in Lonetrek) * Network Effect (most commonly noted and also known as network externality) * Bandwagon Effect (also known as Social Proof) * Hotelling Effect (also known as Location model, SalopÆs Circle Model, etc) * A large percentage of players are Caldari and live in Caldari Space nearby Jita. * Player's Broker Fees, can be reduced with Faction standing and Corporation standing vs. the particular Jita station owner. (Caldari Navy, & Caldari State) * Jita has 4 stations that provide Science and Industry Manufacturing slots (50 spots each station) * Jita has many stations that provide reprocessing facilities. * Jita has Caldari Navy Loyalty point stores * Jita used to provide missions but no longer does * Jita used to provide minable asteroid belts but no longer
