Im mining - found out that because veldspar takes up one third teh space of scordite, the former makes me more money. Same goes for even "larger" ores like pyroxeres.
But what about REFINED ores? Are refined veldspar still worth more than refined scordite or pyroxeres?

Edited by: Jane Foo on 05/04/2009 14:15:58 The answer depends upon your refining skills (waste), your standing with the station (taxes), and the value of the minerals that the ore refines into.
Take a cargohold load of each type, check how much it will refine into for you and then calculate what you would make off of selling the minerals.

Provided you have good standing and high enough skills there is a small margin for profit by refining (haven't crunched the numbers yet), but where I think refining does matter is if you want to move your gain to a better market. Then you should refine.
If you just sell locally I don't think there is much to gain. Again, this is just a hunch, I haven't crunched numbers.

As a new player your skills are going to be so low that the ore is probably worth more than the minerals you would get by refining. The people paying top price for ores are likely to have very good refining skills, so it is usually going to take a while before selling refined minerals becomes more profitable than selling ore. Of course it's always a good idea to check, in the end the market decides.

In general, I think minerals are more profitable since you can transport so much more of it to trade hubs at a time. Then again, that depends on the market.
Veldspar is profitable because Tritanium is the most profitable high-sec mineral at the moment (and the price is going up still).

There is an ore refining calculator at Grismar.net which will help you figure out what ores to mine based on ISK/m3 of the ore itself. This will support your findings.
As for the minerals themselves, they are all 0.01m3, so find which one is worth the most per unit and you'll find which mineral will give you the most ISK per shipment.
Note that you could - as an example - focus on mining and refining, but you'll still be paying taxes to the NPC corp that owns the station. So then you need to start running missions (or hanging around with mission runners) to raise your NPC corp standings. I think you hit 0% tax somewhere around 6.67 standings.
You might find, for example, that Veldspar sells for 11 ISK a unit, while Tritanium sells for 4 ISK a unit. Since you get about 3 Tritanium from each unit of Veldspar (refined in batches of 333 to get 1000 trit), you could sell the Veldspar for 12 ISK a unit by refining it into tritanium first. However at anything higher than 8% tax & waste combined, you're better off selling the Veldspar as-is.
But I'm rambling again.
tl;dr: Veldspar is worth more when refined, if you have less than 8% losses from tax and refining.
