I'm looking to make a mission running character and Caldari seem the best choice with a full range of damage types from their missiles and strong shield tanking. I've also thought about the gallente ship path focusing on using drone boats do run missions with the benefit that armor tanking appears to require less SP to do effectively. Though their guns have limited damage types I can pick and choose the drones depending on whatever the needs of the mission so that shouldn't be an issue. In terms of playstle caldari seem to prefer range while Gallente go for getting in close.
Is this an accurate summing up of those races ships and is one superior to the other in PvE?

It's not a bad summary.
The Domi works well as a mission boat due to the power of it's drones.
Drones are good in that they don't need ammo and thus after the initial cost they're free to run as long as you don't loose them
However new spawns can and will start to target drones, needing a recall/redeploy. Loosing them cuts into your profits.
Missiles work fine, but some ships carry Defenders reducing your DPS somewhat.
So, both work.

How much of a role do guns play when running missions with drone boats? I assume that as Gallente I'll be wanting to max out gunnery and drone skills. Not to be lazy but I've found that using guns in missions can be somewhat tedious with the constant adjustments required to minimise transverse velocity. With missiles its just target and shoot.

Seems pretty comprehensive.
I also prefer the shield tanking animations to that of the armor tanking ones. A minor point but if I'm going to be looking at these ships for a long time probably worth taking into consideration.

Yes, except the faction for which you run missions matters. If you're running missions against mainly EM-weak rats, then an Amarr ship may be better in specific situations. For running missions against everyone else, Caldari missile boats are usually best because you can have complete control over your damage type whereas turret ships don't, even if their DPS is mitigated by rat Defenders.
Your play style also matters. If you want to run missions AFK, then Gallente may be a better choice. A T2 sentry Domi with good armor skills can basically just plop in the middle of a mission, and when you come back 30 minutes later it's all done. Passive Caldari missile boats (Drake, NH) can do something similar, although you have to reload missiles and re-target every few minutes. All other active ships require active participation, especially if you're not cap stable and have to pulse your shield booster.

Another huge advantage with missile boats is that they are immune to tracking disruptors. This can be incredibly annoying when fighting blood/sansha rats in certain missions.

Thank you for that info. I think I will stick with this caldari toon with that in mind.

We have a winner!
One thing many people forget is those nasty TDs. These things can make your shiny new turrets completely useless, but they don't effect missiles at all.
Another thing people forget is that Amarr agents often give non blood/sansha missions. And the 3 biggest missions are WC, EA and AE. These missions are much tougher on Amarrian ships.
So ya, stick with the raven and her sisters.
