My friend got an e-mail today that stated he was eigible to recieve an inheritance form some random person. the 2 e-mails were form a yahoo account, 1 from some guy and one from a supposed bank. the e-mails stated that since the guy in charge of the inheritance lost track of the actual person to recive it he choose my friend to recieve the money, and that they would split it 50/50. the mail from the bank states that they have tried contacting him to get some personal info to verify they can send him the money, or somthing to that effect.
I would like to try and "scam" the scamer but am having trouble thinking of some ideas. I have heard of somone doing somthing like this before (and the scamer actually sent the guy some money to prove it wasnt a scam...).
so anyone got any funny ideas that i could try?

Edited by: Fi Vantage on 09/04/2009 05:24:54 There's websites dedicated to this kind of thing. Search for 419 scambait.
Usually, the general idea is to get the scammer to waste their own time and money. However, you could always say that you are pretty poor and need money to get access to internet that you can use regularly, as the e-mail you are using is actually a friend's. Then go about demanding money for everything from bus transport and opening a bank account to breaking your friends comp and flying over to see them.
If they start demanding money, you can coordinate with some of the people from the scambaiting web sites. They know how to make it sound like somebody else got to the money transfer place before them to steal the scammed money.
Edit: Never give them your real name and country. Say you are from China.

I like your reasoning, Fi.
I've always enjoyed getting some modi****of petty revenge on scammers and advertisers. My personal favourite is to take the circulars that come through my door and send them back with someone else promotion in them (effectively taking two circulars and swapping the contents), thus sending pizza flyers to an insurance company and so on. It places a strain on the Royal Mail, but as long as it's freepost, the company are paying.

Fight fire with fire. Always, but with subtlety, light a hope in front of them that their deal is gonna run through. They're in this for the big catch, and if they believe it will happen they will be prepared to lose a few pawns in the battle. This is the game you'll have to play. Baiting.
Never sound too eager, and never sound too stupid, as that is two very big give-aways, also for spotting trolls! A nice trick is to hide a bit behind a language barrier (pretend you're far from perfect with the English written language), this way you can get away with a lot of things in writing which would otherwise have set off an alarm.
For help with phone-calls and so on, ally yourself with a scam-baiting community. Google!
One of the communities, at least a few years back, had a very entertaining and lucrative (not in means of coins, but rather trophies) bait running. This bait lasted months where the poor guy send numerous confirmations pictures of himself with buckets on his head and so on, only to receive a broken dishwashers with violate user decorations instead of the promised cheap "An*s Laptops" (their bait company). They of course claimed UPS had Fracked Up and the poor guy had another supply of violate kitchen hardware picked up by UPS.
Enjoy, and fly safe..

Wonder how long it's going to be before the Nigerians put up fake scam baiting sites in a classic double bluff?
