Hey i think it would be great that if in the next expansion or patch, doesn't matter to me, you allowed us the people of eve to customize our ship colors through station in like a mechanic sort of like repair shop. I know lots of other people would be pysched if this came true.
pretty please, Platypus King COME ONE PPL I KNOW YOU ALL WOULD ENJOY IT

Have a look in the commonly proposed idea's thread at the top of the forum. This idea has been done to death.
The two main arguments are: 1) extra lag having to down load each separate color scheme. In a fleet battle or one of the busier systems you will have to download a large number of color schemes.
2) Offensive color schemes that CCP would have to police.
Here is the link to the tread form the commonly proposed idea's thread about painting ships.

I'm not really interested to have an additional NŠ-N additional server/DB calls just to check IF there is a custom skin. Near exponential functions are bad M'kay. Having the game bog down everytime some large Corp/alliance have a fleetfight it too high a price to have a purely esthetic.
Think about it nowaday 1500 players fight is not that uncommon so a fight like this would generate about 2248500 (yes as in 224.5K) addidtion operations on the server/DB and that's not even counting the mechanics to actually fetch and load the skin itself.
Yes it would be fun and would let you see geddon painted with big phalus and hello kitty kestrel and such but the additional load would kill any chances of lag free game.

too much content loading would bog the server down with unnecessary processes that do not enhance gameplay.

Well it could be set up so that the colors you apply are to specific parts of the ships and the only thing that designates the color is a specific code specified by CCP. Like if you wanted to give a Thorax blue trim you could set it somewhere and from then on when your ship loaded on grid it sent that code to the clients in range and they saw that color instead of the default. Limiting it to pre-designed color schemes would allow CCP to not have to worry about people being offensive, but it would still allow people to customize their ships a little more. Even if it was just 8 to 12 colors, that wouldn't be too terrible and it shouldn't really add too many more processes/database calls.

Most of the people are zoomed out to see the whole scenery. Nearly no one would see your customizations anyways so it's a moot point.
