what do you need a carrier for ? you should be aware it is mainly a logistics, not a combat ship and therefore is not good at defending itself. also it is lowsec+0.0 only... For skills, drone+core skills depending on which one you get

Pretty much this.
Carriers are awesome if used properly - which I have a feeling OP wouldn't. ;) ___________________

He has to learn somewhere.
While that's true, the OP has it backwards. Instead of "I really want a carrier - what does it do?" he should learn about capital ships ideally by questions like
"I want to do such and such, what ships are best for that?"; or "My corporation is skirmishing in lowsec with an enemy that we know has access to carriers - what are their capabilities on the battlefield, how can we defeat them or should we just retreat from them"; or "I've noticed that capital ships take a lot more skillpoints to use than subcapitals; what advantages do they get that makes them worthwhile?"; or "My friend has a carrier and wants me to open cynosural fields for him to get around - how does this work?" etc.
I also have a feeling that the OP will be quite disappointed when he finds out how carriers actually work.
Edit - but to be nice to the OP: Originally by: Brevidy I have hard they not that good because they rely on the drones to much.
In what context were you asking about carriers (i.e. "good for what?"), and did you get any further justification than this? Without the context it's hard to tell (e.g. if you're talking about pirating at gates, then this could in fact be a liability, whereas generally it's probably not).

Carriers have several uses:
1) 0.0 combat operations - protecting friendly capital (and battleship) fleets, repairing POS's and their modules 2) Excellent ship for import-export between 0.0 and empire, more so if the items are under 15K m3, your alliance has a good cyno beacon network, and also for transporting assembled ships up to 1M m3 3) Assign fighters to alt ratting
Many 0.0 pilots who fly carriers, do so as part of their training to fly a dreadnaught. The navigation skills overlap, as does the requirement for racial battleship level V. The most useful carriers, to an 0.0 alliance that engages in territorial warfare: 1) Thanatos and Nidhoggur - bonus to rep range for both remote armor and shields 2) Archon and Chimera - have bonus to only one armor/shield
The best Dreads: 1) Revelation - generally highest dps, never reloads 2) Moros - excellent range, decent dps with sentries deployed 3) Phoenix and Naglfar - both rely on citadel torps, which take time to reach a target, and do less damage against things smaller than a control tower - both are near useless against anything smaller than a capital ship, although the Nag does have 2 turret slots

Well really I haven't played in years. O just got back into the game and before I had a plan for a carrier. After reading what you guys say I am not so sure if it's what I want now.
I am not going to pirate. I have 2 miners that I guard a lot when they are mining alos when my corp needs me in mining protection or tracking pirates to kill them.
At the momment I am in Rokh. He really stinks to, he takes like 1 min to target something. Barely does any dmg to.
So from what I said what do you guys think would be the best path for me. Stay in my Rokh or move on to something else. Also I am still trying to learn about the skills. As you can see I not know much considering I have a Rokh and I am saying it stinks at fighting.

Send me the Rokh, I'll fly it better.

My guess is that you're fighting small targets, so fly something smaller and T2, maybe a Command ship? a Drake maybe. possibly even t3 cruiser, easy skills, wait for the price to drop a bit. Want to get rich? it's easy, spend less than you earn. Okay, move along, this is my sig. |

The Rokh is an excellent long range, sniping Battleship, especially when range is more important than dps. Caldari ships, in general, are not as sought after for pvp as some other races. That said, they have some decent Command Ships (better than Gallente, in my opinion), the Falcon (and Scorpion) which will probably be ok even after the upcoming nerf, and the Eagle which is a great sniping anti-frigate/support ship. The Crow is a fine interceptor, but every race has at least one of those.
I'm not a big fan of missile boats in pvp. Mostly due to the fact that missiles take time to reach their target, and their damage can be limited based on sig radius and target speed (not transversal).
Many older players cross train races to gain access to other ships. My main is Minmatar, and can also fly and fit T2 Caldari and Amarr ships. The only race I recommend avoiding cross training for pvp is Gallente, unless you can already use T2 heavy drones and T2 sentries. Also, I don't encourage people cross train Caldari unless they're doing it solely for ECM ships.

Ok so the Haevy Assualt Ship Cerberus is what I am looking for. It's a heavy missle ship which is what I really want. Other than the prereq I have to train what others to you suggest?

Clearly you are a terrible pilot. Please contract me your ships. I will put them to good use.

Hmmm ok it doesn't hurt to plan for what you want to eventually fly & those people that are knocking/mocking you for having enough balls to come onto the forums and ask really must have too much FREE time on their hands
Trainging all the skills you need to fly a carrier properly is going to take a fair amount of time if you haven't already began to train along that path but in the end if you want to fly a carrier that is all you can do other than buying a pre-made cap pilot..
To play using a carrier or capital ship you really should have at least 2 accounts (1 for the cap pilot, the other for Cyno characters/ characters that can use cyno & do whatever else you want them to do) Otherwise you will tend to find that you are always relying on other people to get you cyno's when you want to move around & that can be a real pain in the @ss.
So as you can see there is more to flying a carrier than just jumping into it due to it's inability to use warp gates & thats probably the easiest of the issues to fix I guess......
