Conditioning is generally considered to be a part of psychology, not sociology. In this case, however, it falls under social psychology.
As a student of both sociology and psychology, don't believe any kind of conditioning happens within GoonSwarm. It is a group which presents incredible solidarity and conformity to certain in-jokes and memes, but not because they have been conditioned to do so (a conditioned individual has no choice). Instead, you should look at the concept of internalisation. GoonSwarm members happily accept these values and follow the group voluntarily, because they believe in it, enjoy it and because they benefit from it.
If you look at yourself and your own corporation then I'm sure you'll find that you do the exact same thing, as does every other person who is happy with the corporation they are in. ---

DARIUS: (Spoken) Against BOB we need every GOON we got.
MITTANI: (Spoken) SUAS don't belong any more.
DARIUS: Cut it, MITTANI boy. I and SUAS started the GOONS.
MITTANI: Well, he acts like he don't wanna belong.
BANE: Who wouldn't wanna belong to the GOONs!
MITTANI: SUAS ain't been with us for over a year.
GOUMINDONG: What about the day we clobbered the Volteras?
STAHLEGEN: Which we couldn't have done without SUAS.
BANE: He saved my ever-lovin' neck!
DARIUS: Right! He's always come through for us and he will now.
(Sings) When you're a GOON, You're a GOON all the way From your first little scam To your last flaming day.
When you're a GOON, If the spit hits the fan, You got e-friends around, You're a family man!
You're never alone, You're never disconnected! You're home on your own: No company expected, You're well protected!
Then you are set With a capital G, Which you'll never forget Till they cart you away. When you're a GOON, You stay a GOON!
(Spoken) I know SUAS like I know me. I guarantee you can count him in.
MITTANI: In, out, let's get crackin'.
STAHLEGEN: Where you gonna find Molle?
DARIUS: At the top station tonight in JITA.
JAMES DUAR: But JITA's neutral territory.
DARIUS: (Innocently) I'm gonna make nice there! I'm only gonna challenge him.
STAHLEGEN: Great, Daddy-O!
DARIUS: So everybody dress up sweet and sharp.
ALL (Sing) Oh, when the GOONs fail in the Delve war dance, We'll be the sweetest empire gang in pants! And when the chicks dig us in our GOON black eyes, They're gonna flip, gonna flop, gonna drop like flies!
DARIUS: (Spoken) Hey. Cool. Easy. Sweet. Meet SUAS and me at ten. And walk tall!
STAHLEGEN: We always walk tall!
BANE: We're GOONs!
MITTANI: The greatest!
MITTANI and BANE (Sing) When you're a GOON, You're the lolcat in town, You're the bronze medal kid With the runner-up crown!
TAHLEGEN, MITTANI, JAMES DUAR When you're a GOON, You're the swingin'est thing: Little boy meet a man; Little man I'm your king!
ALL The GOONs are in gear, Our cylinders are clickin'! The BOBs'll steer clear 'Cause ev'ry BOB's a lousy chicken!
Here come the GOONs Like a bat out of hell. Someone gets in our way, Someone don't feel so well!
Here come the GOONs: Little world, step aside! Better go underground, Better run, better hide!
We're drawin' the line, So keep your noses hidden! We're hangin' a sign, Says "Visitors forbidden" And we ain't kiddin'!
Here come the GOONs, Yeah! And we're gonna beat Ev'ry last buggin' gang On the whole buggin' map! On the whole! Ever! Mother! Lovin'! Map! Yeah!

I don't know.
But how is being part of an "entity" with some kind of goal makes you a subject to what you are saying?
Is it the same thing with Kenzoku? Do they even have an identity?

In simple terms, yes... Combine the three (weak, young and socially indept,) and you get the sort of 'tards you're talking about...

The insecurity-factor definately plays a role. I read an article about a study a sociologist had done on the subject of online-gaming communities. While it is true, that in the past computer-game enthusiasts (gamers) tended to be socially isolated, insecure and fairly intelligent, the modern gamer is more varied - or more representative of the general population in society.
I personally think, that the evolution of the EVE community reflects real life society more than we care to admit. The reason for this is simple. The players are ultimately human beings. They play the game out of a desire to satisfy their specific needs.
Out in the real world, the tendency has been to favor a more self-centered personality type. Young and beautiful equals succes, and you gotta have succes, to be human. The pressure this puts on people is immense, and the majority seem to have responded by acting like total ASSHATS!
Twenty+ years of "good times" have done its part too. Entire generations growing up with surplus. Mom and dad buys big-screen TVs, cell phones, laptops, clothes and everything their kids need to "keep up with the herd."
In this carefree world, flawed personalies (like other mutations,) are given more room. Society tolerates their negative sides in order to benefit from their (sometimes) positive aspects. Case in point - many succesful business leaders share traits with psycopaths.
So to put it briefly: Players act like tards in games, because acting like tards in the real world is 'normal', and carries no penalty - much less so in an imaginary world.

...also, now that the economic times are changin', perhaps displaying intellect and abilities will come into fashion again.
Put-downs, dissing and general forum-warfare might once again demand talent. At the moment places like CAOD are stuck at a farting-joke level. If we were freestyle rappers, we would be stuck at the Yo' mamma phase, hurling clichTs at eachother.
I long for the CAOD-equivalent of two-way freestyle battle. Quick rimes from the hip, some break-dancers, and a fat beat to trot it all up

GoonSwarm as an organization does not represent a social conditioning mechanism; it shares much more in common with a religion, in the sense of it being a community through which its members gain certain real or perceived benefits by subscribing to a system of beliefs. In the case of the Goons, those 'beliefs' are internet memes, hatred toward plastic dolls and friends of plastic dolls, riling up other players, etc. The Goon makes a rational choice to join the organization and take on the expectations of the organization, because said Goon sees a net profit in joining. There is no social conditioning, for this would need to come from the EVE playerbase as a whole; there is only a choice to join a particular group out of many other groups.
Or maybe all of this analysis of the EVE universe as an analogue to reality is completely fubar, because peoples' actions in EVE are in no way similar to their actions in real life. Somehow, I highly doubt all of those <insert insult here> Goonies start z0r chains during their staff meetings at work, nor do they stand up in those meetings and proudly proclaim "I accidentally the whole company"...

All you have to do is read the forums to see how massively this relates to Goonswarn as an entity.

I would argue Goons are far from socially conditioned, which is why we, the socially conditioned to find this sort of behavour so unacceptable, do indeed, find their behavour so unacceptable.

Actually, I have made the observation that people in Eve are behaving EXACTLY as in real life. Despite the fact that this is a roleplaying game, most individuals I encountered behaved very much according to their RL personality (myself included). They may do it more excessively in Eve - but in the end their online behaviour is a decent reflection on their RL value set.
Apart from that, I think the Goon question is less about social conditioning. We are all socially conditioned - by the Eve community and our corp/alliance values - and that is fine.
What I ask myself is: how can a community remain successfull and have friends in the rest of the player base (PL, MM, KIA, Zenith, RZR, the rest) that is so clearly aimed at demeaning the other human being?? (Yes I have read some pretty bad racist and holocaust-apologetic stuff in local channels with Goon presence)
I was there during the ASCN wars. Their forum spam was regular propaganda - unpleasant but not disgusting to the point we seem to have reached these days.
And back then I thought the GoonSwarm idea was funny and laughed about it. Well, for me it is not any more and I now await the day they will bugger off to Jumpgate Evolution.

When you center your life around things that are important to your ego but relatively insignificant from a broader perspective, then youÆve got a bit of a problem. Your ego becomes highly invested in keeping your perspective small and tight because thatÆs where the ego draws its identity. Your job, your relationships, and your personality quirks become your identity. ItÆs how you define yourself as an individual. You become invested in your problems because they help your ego define itself. The ego needs boundaries to survive, and expanding your ego threatens the ego and its sense of self. If you broaden your perspective too far, you will begin to feel youÆre losing touch with reality. You may feel disconnected, depressed, or uncomfortably separated from the rest of the world. You start asking, ôIs this all there is?ö What once seemed fulfilling now leaves you empty inside. |

Social conditioning also teaches us to keep our perspective small in time and space. When do TV characters ever take on a cosmic perspective? Most dont broaden their perspective beyond themselves and their families. At best they assume the perspective of their community, their religion,or their country. These characters condition you to do the same, and you probably donÆt even realize that thereÆs an alternative. If the media can control your perspective and keep it small and tight, then it can more easily influence you to do what it wants, such as ôkeep watchingö and ôbuy stuff.ö A person with a limited perspective will more easily become a media addict and will buy things to feel secure. Materialism helps maintain the illusion of that limited perspective. A person with a cosmic consciousness doesnÆt need much stuff because s/he will perceive it as trivial or unimportant, which indeed most of it is. Hence, the media doesnÆt encourage us to broaden our perspective beyond a certain point (usually no further than oneÆs own nation or religion). |

Most of the unconscious negative beliefs we inherit have to do with survival and the fear of death. We may not see them as having anything to do with the fear of death, but most if not all of them ultimately do. For example is the belief that in order to be happy you need to æbecome somebody,Æ and that quality of life is dependent upon status in society. Again,we may be aware of this on a surface level; the common parental pressure to go into a certain line of work (become a doctor, lawyer, etc.) and to follow a safe and predictable path in life, but these seemingly trivial things are often like icebergs, where 90% of it is obscured beneath the surface. Our parentsÆ desire for us to make it and their fear that we donÆt make it is echoed within ourselves, because we share their conditioning. As they were taught by their parents and society, they teach us that you need to be æsomebodyÆ in order to be at ease and satisfied. Happiness is correlated with external factors such as posessions, social connections, accolades, and so on, and this particular bundle of beliefs is fundamental to common conditioning. |
