Im looking for a good mael build. For L4 missions. Something that survive recon mission. I have access to most T2 gear, working on guns. I can only use (and afford) tier 1 rigs for now. This will be used solo and as a duo mission runner only. I realize that this has most likely been asked before but since I'm browsing on a phone I decided to just ask. Any input will be appreciated

I would say get a typhoon fit it up with a set of sentry (for angel missions beserkers might be better) and scout drones, with cruise missiles and armor tank. can fit some arty on there if ya want.

This is the setup I started using at around 5-6m SP to do lvl 4 missions. I was immediatly able to do any lvl 4 mission with it, as long as I knew what I was doing. I just used eve-survival alot so I knew triggers and such, and never got over my head.
As I got more sp/isk, I upgraded the setup with better rigs, gear, etc. If I had the skills for X-large tech II boosters I would replace the large with it, but I honestly never ran into a mission where a single large couldn't tank. The only main change I sometimes make with this setup, is sometimes running 8 large autocannons instead, which is nice for Angel missions as they get up nice and close.

This is a good one I would recommend. Some slight variations, depending on the mission:
Mid Slot: Afterburner can be replaced for a Heavy Cap Booster on more DPS-intensive missions
Low Slot: Damage Control can be swapped out for an extra Tracker Enhancer, when you feel you can drop the extra 5% resists.

What do you need all that cap for? replace one of the lows with a PDU ( 4th gyro, it's hardly doing anything ) & you don't really need any CCC rigs, or one ( or a Semiconductor Memory Cell ) + a solidifier if you want a bigger permatank. Leaves one rig slot for a projectile rig, maybe tracking, damage won't do much with all the gyros & you don't really need range with art... or some other rig that takes your fancy.

thanks for the input people. this gives me an idea of what gear to look for when building one. as far as Typhoon idea goes. i should have mentioned that my armor tanking are a bit lacking. Tried one out, lost it in the first room of Recon 1. got scrambled and the npc dps output made me want to cry for my mommy. this time i'm making sure i have the gear/skills needed to survive that crap.

I hear yeah. Takes awhile for us poor minnies to get all those skills worked up. Maelstrom is a good ship but better for dps than tanking in my experience. Maybe that will change when I finally get Minnie BS 5 done,.. until then, my shield and armor tanking skills being equal and near maxed, the phoon is the tanking beast and the only one I'd feel comfortable taking into that mission. My Maelstrom fit would have cap issues.
Of these though, I think I like Jbobj's Maelstrom fit the best. His fit is close to mine but he uses a capacitor safeguard where i use an extender rig, and an Invuln where I use a cap recharger or a booster, but I run AC's on mine where that's probably no good for missioning.

i've been itching to fly this thing for a long time. i'm just worried that it my go to the same place my phoon did when i got scrambled. T2 drones should have fix that issue i'm thinking. I'm going to test Jbobj's build first and adjust for personal prefference from there. all that's needed is to save up 30m isk for the guns and to replace the gyros with T2 versions.

I have acquaintances who swear by AC mael for missions, albeit in minmatar space so it's mostly angels. Jbobj's setup is really nice, but not much margin for error ( sustained tank time is pretty low ), you might want to use a cap booster for a bit until you get the hang of missions.
T2 drones with reasonable support skills ( 1m SP or so to start ) would be a very good idea, yes.

i was thinking about the AC's. most of the builds i've seen on battleclinic use them over artys. i'm thinking that that's because the ship is so slow, but with an AB that could be fixed. at least for short bursts of speed.

Angels come to you, and ( most ) orbit at 8km or so... BUT - that's a long time waiting for them to get close which you could be pew-pewing away with artillery. I have a blaster+sentry Domi I use for angels which obviously does both, but I was so bored of that elsewhere I started using a rail Hyperion which still spends most of it's time on full AB to keep stuff around optimal, and not only that but to reduce the damage I take by quite a bit. Especially where you're getting spammed with torps, going 300m/s can reduce the damage by loads. I think I managed Serpentis Extravaganza the other day with three repper cycles total.
I think I'd still try an AC mael ( with ambit to ease the pain a bit ), but only as I have alternatives.

fair enough.
5x warrior/hobgob/hornet II drones is very useful to have when mission running. for that reason.
recon is one of those missions where either good tank or good gank is important. as the respawns are timed. if you can kill the battleships as they spawn you don't need to tank very much.
or you can just blitz through in a shuttle/frigate and not worry about the whole gank or tank. (although the bounties are somewhat nice, I stay for them)

I run a perma boost on a CNR, have being soloing lvl 4s for months now. My shields rarely drop by more than 5-10% on any mission and its only a t2 fit, t1 rigs (no need for t2 on lvl 4s).
I see some people mentioning Invulns and DCU for mission fits. Invulns should be for omni tank missions only and in my opinion damage control is never needed unless you plan to take hull damage.
Any lvl 4 solo mission boat needs perma run capability when starting out until you are more comfortable dropping cap for gank.
This is my mission ship concept, every perma boost should priorities the mods below. Once fitted, fill in the the empty slots to either provide more gank or more cap.
Middle: 4 mission hardners, 2 of each type eg 2 x EM, 2 X Therm 1 XL shield booster
Rigs: 3 X CCC rigs.
Ad yes, I fitted this on a Mael in sisi and built a perma boost ship that can easily outtank the CNR I've used for 6 months now.

Edited by: Regalis on 14/04/2009 16:45:12 I've just purchased a Maelstrom for Lvl 4 missions. My setup is similar to the ones above and I can ALMOST perma tank it. Overall I'm quite satisfied with it. However, I am finding in Gurista Extravaganza in the last room I am having difficulty. Soon as I get Scrammed it gets ugly, my T2 drones just don't take down the frigates fast enough so when i'm webbed as well as scrammed the damage gets very difficult to mitigate. Here is what I am using, any suggestions would be appreciated. Highs: 8 X 1400 T2's Mids: 1 X Large Shield Booster T2, 1 X Invuln T2, 1 X Ballistic T2 (kinetic), 1 X Thermal T2, 2 X Shield Amp Booster T2 Lows: 3 X Gyro's T2, 2 X PDU T2 RigsL 3 X CCC Drones: 7 Hammerhead T2, 2 X Ogre T1 (working on T2 now)

Edited by: Highwind Cid on 14/04/2009 17:12:08 Because I'm cheap I developed the rigless maelstrom mission runner. And it does in fact tank Recon part 1. (Still close though)
Highs: 8x 1200MM Arties T2 (once doable) I stack 5 and leave 3 seperate.
Mids: 1x X-Large C-5 SB 3x Rat specific Hardeners 1x 100mn AB (I or II) 1x Large Electrochemical thingie Cap Booster (800's)
Lows: 2x Tracking Enhancer II 3x Gyrostab's II
Drones: 5xHammers 5xGoblins, fill the remaining space with backups.
With whats above no lvl 4 gave me a problem, except the few times I wasn't paying attention, but even then the 1Bill+ fit marauder would be in trouble too.
Best part is, no rigs.

Thanks for the correction JP! You were correct. I was thinking of changing the mids on this ship to: 1 100mn AB T2 1 Lge Shield Booster T2 1 Invuln T2 2 Rat specific hardeners
But to do that I'd have to change the guns to 1200 T2 instead of the 1400's. I find the 1400's are much superior than the 1200's when fighting BS's, but I honestly never compared 1200 T2's with 1400 T2's to see if the one outperforms the other, guess it depends on circumstance. I use only Faction Ammo as well for that little something extra! Thanks! Reg

highs: 8x 1400 scouts

i think i get leik 550dps and omni-tank 1099/1099... oh, and please, for the love of god, don't use CCC's if you want to lower your cap use, especially 3 of them, waste of rig space. cap safeguards are much more effective. feel free to flame my gun setup though XD

Since I can't use BSes yet, I can only talk about the (imho) similar looking 650mm to 720mm switch. The advantage is visible but not "large", expecially if you have to make compromises elsewhere in order to fit the bigger guns.

I prefer 1200s over 1400s, for the reasons you specify. Remember, 5% greater ROF is always > 5% Damage.
